Crashing on Android - display says there is a "bug"

For the last few days Spotify will not open. Inotially Android displayed notification saying there is a bug and to clear cache. 

I cleared cache and now it won't open at all.

I am loathe to uninstall as will wipe all my downloaded songs

Thanks for reaching out & sorry to see you've been having issues with your app!

Could you let us know if the abovementioned error message has been a Spotify one or a type of Android notification?

As for the error itself, it seems to me that there might be a corrupted app file on your device, which is now preventing the app from opening and/ or functioning properly. With this in mind, although it will remove your downloads, which is always the least preferred option, the best way to go in this situation would be indeed be to perform a complete clean reinstall of the app.
