Downloaded songs stop playing when no internet connection

I have a premium subscription. My songs are downloaded. They play fine as long as I have an internet connection (any connection). As soon as I disconnect from the internet the song I try to play stops after about 20 seconds.

The songs are definitely downloaded, playing them while connected to the internet does not use any data.

I have deleted the songs, deleted the app, reinstalled everything. actually switched phones, but the problem persits. This problem also only occured about a month ago (Nov 2016). Until then it had worked fine.

I have a Fairphone 1

Android 4.2.

Spotify version 7.2.0.1250 armV7

Spotify is set to save to my SD card
