Equaliser not working when starting and phone locked

My Question or Issue

The equaliser in Spotify will not work if the device is paired when the lock screen is engaged. It only works when I open the phone with my fingerprint. 

This is frustrating as it automatically pairs and plays when I get in my car. I have to ensure I unlock the phone so the equaliser cuts in. 

Any ideas?
