Description of the issues:

I listen music from the smartphones via Bluetooth on a JBL Flip 6. I use Google Assistant by asking him what I want to listen, eg: "Hey Google, play the album Book of Shadows of Zakk Wylde on Spotify", and Google Assistant immediately reply to me: "Ok: I start Book of Shadows of Zakk Wylde on Spotify"; after some seconds, spotify starts and I can see that the play status bar in the notification is moving, aswell in the app itself is moving: the track is in play status, but no sound on the speaker: the audio is not udible; to listen the sound I have to open Spotify, pause the track and then click on play.
And as I indicated in the title, also happen the fact that when I ask to play or resume, the music on Spotify is not played at all.

These conditions occurs, I'd say, 80% of the time.

I also tried with another loudspeaker (bluetooth and wired) and the behaviour is the same on both devices (smartphones)

No problems, instead, with Google Music or YouTube: as I ask to the Assistant to start a song, such song is immediately udible.

I excluded Spotify, Google, Assistant and Home, from battery saving, I granted to Spotify all the  available permissions, also the permission to run in background through the command

adb shell cmd appops set com.spotify.music RUN_IN_BACKGROUND allow
I also cleared the cache, unlinked and relinked Spotify in the Assistant settings, but these actions didn't solved the described issues.
I noticed that if I force-stop Spotify, the behaviour is OK.

I'm not alone:

So, is a common issue that is still occurring as today, in 2025, and in my humble opinion, is a shame that Spotify's team and developers haven't still fixed this issue.
I am very disappointed, because these issues occurs since many years, as I evidenced by the provided links.

I implemented a very dirty workaround, using Tasker and Google Home's routines:
In Tasker I made a task which: press the stop button, wait two seconds and quit/kill Spotify.

This is triggered when to Google Assistant I ask "Hey Google, quit Spotify" (set in the routine)

I made as well another Task in Tasker,  that: Start Spotify, wait four seconds and click on the play button.
This second task, is linked to another routine, in which I ask: "Hey Google, Play Spotify", I can also ask to play another artist/song. (set in the routine).

This method/workaround using Tasker and Google Home's routines has made the combination of Google Assistant/Spotify, reliable. But obviously IS NOT THE SOLUTION: the developers of Spotify should look at the code.

I have a good news: since some time (Iwould say since more than a week), the interaction between Google Assistant and Spotify, seems OK.
At the moment, I can ask anything Spotify related to the assistant (eg, a little while ago I asked "play some electronic music from 80's) and Spotify has immediately start without issues.

However remains the fact that Google Assistant, also if I give specific names to my playlists, doesn't recognize them and play different random playlists. Even worse with Google Gemini which is totally unable to do these basic tasks.

However: I prefer to wait to mark this topic as solved: I want to be totally sure that this behaviour will cotinue to be stable and functional.
