Music player won't stay open in background

I am currently running android 5.0.1 on a nexus 5 (no root). Unlike Google Play Music services, the Spotify music player that used to continue running when I would switch the application has disappeared. The music still plays in the background, however, when I switch applications the music player is not in the notifications tray/lock screen, meaning that I need to go back into the actual application to pause, switch songs, etc. Is there setting to enable/disable this? Or is it a lollipop/Spotify problem that is making this happen?
