My Question or Issue
Recently, I have been unable to swipe away the Spotify controls notification once I'm done listening. It'll just move over to show the notifications options button. The only way to get rid of the controls notification is to close the app or let Android put the app to sleep after 10-30 mins. This is very annoying as with the Android 11 update, I can only see one notification on my lock screen at a time, and Spotify always takes priority, even if I'm not listening to anything. I have to unlock my phone, scroll over on the multitasking menu, and close the app to dismiss the notification.
Every music app I use either lets me swipe away the controls notification, or gives me the option to close it from the notification. I feel like this must be a bug, but can't resolve the issue or find anyone else with the problem. I've tried deleting cache/data, uninstalling and reinstalling, changing various notification options, but nothing helps.
Hey there @Dantpool,
Thanks for the reply and for the video recording! We've gone ahead and passed this info to the right team.
We can't provide you with a timeframe in which this will get addressed but we'll let you know as soon as we have an update on the topic.
If anything else comes up in the meantime, the Community will be here for you.
Been monitoring this thread since the beginning. Spent all these months on Paranoid Android because it lets you forcefully dismiss any media control notification.
At this point it became ridiculously clear that fixing this problem even by simply putting cross button in the notification like YouTube did is at the end of their priority list. Seems like:
- Most developer force at Spotify, a profit-oriented company, is ofc assigned to tasks which are more profitable than helping even a few thousand annoyed non-iOS users get back the comfort they used to have by default.
- Moderators - with all respect for their work ❤️ - even if they really try to help, or at least believe they do, in such situation are just unable to do anything but proceed and repeat something hollow yet assuring in a bureaucratic, corporative manner
Besides, this sticky notification certainly improves user retention, constantly reminding you about the app . So why bother? Most users would tolerate it rather than leave.
Truth is, there are just no real reasons for Spotify to fix it, and no ways for people here to cause any significant pressure through such thick muffler of moderation

- In stock Android, there is an "Media" sub menu in the "Sounds & Vibrations" settings that allows you to "Hide player when the media session has ended" which you can turn on.
if you are using a samsung phone read on:
- Samsung for whatever goofy reason decided to hide this setting, however, you can bring it up again with Nova Launcher.
- Steps in Nova Launcher:
0) Install Nova Launcher, you can uninstall once you have turned on the "Hide player when the media session has ended" setting. you do not have to make Nova Launcher your default launcher for this fix to work
1. Add a widget to your home screen by dragging "Nova Launcher->Activity" widget to your home screen.
2. The widget will present an activity selection dialog, Go to the "Settings" dropdown and open it
3. Select to Media (.Settings$MediaContorlSettingsActivity) (Android 13)
in earlier versions of android it was called goto u/strings/media_controls_title (.Settings$MediaContorlSettingsActivity)
4) Click on the widget once it's created and you will see the missing android setting ui. (this is the "Sound & Vibrations" setting ui samsung removed)
5) Uncheck "Pin Media Player".
6) Uncheck "Show media recommendations"
7) you can remove the widget
😎 you can uninstall Nova Launcher if you were not already a Nova Launcer User
- the Spotify playback control notification will disappear after you swipe Spotify away in the Recents Apps
- the Spotify playback control notification will appear if the Spotify app is open - this does not work for the Samsung Music
- if you have another way to invoke this ui activity: Settings$MediaContorlSettingsActivity you do not need to use Nova Launcher
Please show in screenshots I can't find anything you describe 😌
Ps found it but it wasn't there you wrote unfortunately but thank u . This settings is great
Have had this problem for over 6+ months. Have tried everything and it still doesn't work. I have an LG G8 ThinQ running Android 12 with the most recent version of Spotify from google play store. I still can't swipe it away I have to go the recent apps to get rid of the notification. Ironically, Spotify sent me a recommended artists notification that I was able to swipe away just fine so it has to do with the music player notification itself.
I'm so tired of this every other notification I can swipe away including other music players such as soundcloud.
Is there any way to get a response from a moderator? This issue is still persisting I should just cancel my subscription this is ridiculous.
I was able to fix this on my Motorola One 5G Ace by clicking the gear icon on the actual notification. This brings up a setting along the lines of "show media player for an extended time so it is easy to resume playback"
Samsung may be different, and I know this is old, but it was driving me crazy enough I was going to cancel my account and go back to the box of evil one.
I'm still experiencing this issue. Just wanted to add my name to the list in the hope that enough people do Spotify might actually do something about it
Using iPhone 14 pro and previously iPhone 11 I have checked all settings and everywhere within the app. When closing the app completely it leaves the playing notification up. Clearing notifications does not remove it and it does not swipe. There is no where in the app the swipe or button to close to stop the currently playing. I do not have this issue with any other apps. Please Spotify I have like 1,000s of songs downloaded and have paid since when you first had to. Fix this because I have had enough. I don’t care how just make it so that you app will fully close and remove the currently playing. Jesus.

The only way to get rid of the controls notification is to close the app or let Android put the app to sleep after 10-30 mins. I've downgraded to an older version of spotify, which fixed my problem for a little while, one day maybe. The old version was also so old, i couldn't swipe songs to add them to the queue.. No menu swiping away possible, not on homescreen, not on lockscreen
This was driving me crazy recently. It seems that is was because my phone was in power saving mode. I turned off power saving under settings and it disappeared. Hope this helps all of you that were having problems as well.
