My Question or Issue

I have a playlist with a series of albums that play through in-order because there's a story. There are roughly 100 songs in the playlist, and I do have the playlist downloaded to save on mobile data. If I start playing the playlist and look at the queue, it shows the normal 80 songs you would expect.

However, spotify can seldom play all the way through the playlist because it will randomly cut off the queue to only 4 or 5 songs. This tiny segment of the playlist will play and then the music will stop (or switch to [artist] radio). There is no indication that this is happening until the music stops.

I figured out what was happening when I turned on repeat. Once the queue gets cut off, spotify will repeat those 4-5 songs only. If I skip to the previous song, it will skip "backwards" to the last song on the queue, as if I had built a tiny playlist.

It tends to happen most often when I am connected to my car or my JBL Flip 5 via bluetooth. I can sometimes induce this error by skipping a song with the forward button, or restarting a song with the back button.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling a clean app according to the instructions I've seen linked on so many other questions, but the problem still occurs. Given the absolute clownshoes design of spotify's queue in general, is this somehow just the intended behavior of spotify's queue, or some feature that I'm just using wrong?

Hey folks!

Sorry to see this is still ongoing.
We are going to try to prioritize this investigation in the hopes that we can finally get to the root cause and fix the issue.

If you haven't already, please let us know the following details:

  • Your device + OS (+additional device (speaker, etc.) in case the issue manifests itself there)
  • By rough estimations - the exact time the issue started to appear
  • The last time it happened
  • The number of songs that get repeated and the number of songs in the playlist overall
  • The troubleshooting that has been done so far
  • Any additional details/screenshots that come to mind which you believe might help us resolve the issue quicker

Many thanks in advance. We'll do our best to get to the bottom of this asap.

This is happening to me as well! I have a **bleep** hour playlist and it will randomly start cycling through a set of 5 songs (sometimes when it's on shuffle, sometimes when it's not, sometimes right away, sometimes after listening for a while) and will continue doing so even after I quit out the app and re-open it. The only thing that seems to help is installing whatever the newest update is but invariably it will happen again after a while. I have an iPhone XR running iOS 15.6.1.

Same problem here, for me it happens since this last winter , in my last phone, I thought it was maybe a bug because my phone had a lot of problems, but I changed to a Samsung S22 and it started again, it is kinda random because I cant reproduce the bug intentionally, pressing play again in the playlist seems to be a workaround, and for me it seems that only happens when Im not in shuffle play, today it happened while playing the music in the PC app, so this is not only on phone devices when i skip songs to the 4th of the list, then the same 4 songs reappear, and it happens in all of my playlists

Hi CarlosE,

It's been awhile since we've had a moderator response on this thread.  Is there any news on your end about this issue?

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the inputs so far.

Could you confirm that this occurs only when listening to an external device using Spotify Connect, or when switching playback? I.e. you experience no issues when listening locally on your phone/PC?

Feel free to also include the following details, so we can forward them to the right team:

  1. Your device's make, model and OS version.
  2. The version of Spotify you're running.
  3. The steps necessary to reproduce the issue.

Here are some other threads that report similar behavior, check them out and see if you can reproduce them as well, since they could be connected to your issue:

Cheers!

well the image that I attached is in the PC app, playing through the PC speakers, not connected to external devices,  and when I do it in the phone is the same, using the phone as a speaker

the devices where I found this problem are

Samsung S22 android 12

Asus ROG phone II android 12

Windows 10

Hi @Dryyan,

Thanks for the reply!

Does this happen when a specific track/playlist is played or with all tracks/playlists in general? Since we're unable to reproduce on our end, we'll need as much relevant info on the matter as possible.

In case things start resembling a pattern (i.e. you notice this issue occurring after doing something in particular), be sure to share it here, so we can forward your findings to our internal teams and test if they're reproducible.

Once again thanks and take care!

Hello, exact same issue here on iPhone 13, randomly it get stuck in few songs loop.

i don’t know what is the pattern, it started out of nowhere and I always listen connected to Bluetooth device.

For me it seems to be related to longer playlists and playing across
multiple listening sessions, so something about how the current queue is
stored server-side and how that's synced across clients or updated on a
newly connecting client.

I don't know if it's related, but I've also noticed that if I start a
playlist and listen for awhile on my phone, then later listen for a bit on
my Mac, it will pick up where the phone left off. Then stop (but not exit)
and later play on my phone again, the phone will pick up where the phone
left off the first time, listening to the same songs I listened to on the
Mac.

Phone for me is pixel 5, android 13, fully updated client.

Happens with me as well. Spotify repeats songs before the playlist runs through to the end.

Hey folks,

We hope you're doing great.

In this case, we'd like to check, is this happening with all playlists or does it happen in some specific ones?

In order to continue investigating further, we'll need the URI of all the playlists in which you noticed this behavior.

We'll be on the lookout.

Cheers!

Hi is this what you need? Shared from phone app.

Hello again - this is still happening. Occasionally I notice songs are being repeated, I go to the queue and sure enough maybe 5 songs are listed over and over and over. I now just click a later song and it resets the queue to list the playlist in order like usual. But I wanted to update because the issue is unresolved, and in case anyone else is experiencing the same thing. It happens maybe once a week.

Hey @snappydoodle,

Thanks for the reply.

Could you post a link to the playlist you're experiencing this issue on? We also need a short screen recording of the experience so we can know what we're aiming at reproducing.

Also share the current Spotify version you're using, so we can make sure it's the latest.

Keep us posted,

Cheers!

Oh for sure - I’ll do that next time I notice it happening. It doesn’t seem
to discriminate between playlists but I’ll send whatever one it happens on
next.

Version is 8.7.64.518.

Spotify loop issue

That was quick! Above is a link to a screen record that shows the following:

  • the queue, while the first song plays, displaying a repeating loop of songs after 5 (I think)
  • me skipping through songs to show that they just go round and round and the queue renews with the same songs as the skips progress
  • exit to playlist where I scroll and choose a song not in the loop
  • return to queue where you can see that the loop has stopped and the songs are in proper sequence again.

A link to the playlist is below. I wish it had happened on a cooler playlist but this is the way of life…

Hope this helps, and thanks for your help.

Hey @snappydoodle,

Thanks for getting back to us.

We appreciate the video, but we couldn't open it, so we were not able to find the root cause of what you are experiencing.

Do you mind uploading it to cloud service (like Google Drive) or to a video-sharing platform (such as YouTube shorts) as a private video.

We'll be keeping an eye out for your reply!
