I'm a bit confused as saving an album always used to also save the songs and saving a song also saved the album but, from what I understand, this was changed for those users who got the new "Me" tab where saving an album no longer saved the songs. I assumed this was to get around the 10,000 saved song limit.

Well, as I said, it's always been like that for me. Check out this idea.
Yeah I'm on android. All I can think is that Spotify have been testing different versions on different people. I've been using spotify for years and saving albums has always saved the songs and artist and, as you can see from the links, I'm not alone.
I handle this by saving one song from an album, which shows up in both the "songs" and "albums" lists, Going to either, right click and chose "go to album".
One wonders what the Spotify gods are thinking, although "thinking" is probably too generous.
