My Question or Issue
Spotify on android (samsung) breaking after a few mins in background. Losing all media controls of the app until device restart.
Whenever spotify goes to the background for a bit it will eventually stop working where the song/episode keeps playing but I can't pause/skip and the app doesn't show what is playing either. The only fix I have for this is to restart the device but the problem will just happen again anyways.
I attached what it looks like when it breaks, even though the music is still playing.
Is there any fixes for this? Reinstalling spotify doesn't work. This is happening with Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra every time, and S21 once in a while but not every time.

Same here, same exact issues. The phone will also connect to my cars bluetooth properly, but when I turn off the car and the bluetooth connection disconnects the spotify app will contenue to play music except there is no bar to pause/skip etc. Its like the app doesn't think music is being played but it definitely is. A lot of times, even without being connected to bluetooth at all, the music will just randomly stop and I will have to unlock my phonse and go into the app to click atwhatever I was listenining to make it play again. I have to restart the phone completely to stop these issues, which is pretty often with as much as I use the app. This never happened until I updated to the S21 from my old S9.
I have the same issue with S22+, but only since software update. Make spotify almost unusable, media controls missing on the device and spotify not playing at all in the car using Android Auto. Its very annoying, the S22 was great until this update
S10e same issues. Agree with the other posts, this should have been found before the full release of 12. I've also seen lots of comments about rolling back to old versions of the app fixing the problem. I'm about to turn off auto updates for an app for maybe the third time ever and roll back. (Let alone the hundred other annoyances between the android app and desktop. Where's new eps on desktop????)
I also have this problem....as a fitness instructor this is a problem
Same issues here. My hope was the issues getting Spotify to properly launch when connecting to my cars bluetooth would be resolved. Instead, the app is going haywire...same behaviour others experiencing in this thread.
The need to regularly throw the typical boogeymen at users is insulting. It's not the os, the battery settings, the firmware of my stereo. None of that. It's this pos app that has been plagued with the same God dammed problems for years regardless of version or os. I'm a paying customer and this is what it's come down to? I'm ready to jump ship and have no problems going public to get more to jump ship. So angry with the disregard to these vital technical issues. Your company is a joke.
Ok, I was a little frustrated, my bad. But still. wth Spotify?
I hope this issue gets some traction soon, it's very annoying and I'm paying for a Family subscription.
Similar issue with my S22 Ultra. When I put the phone down and the screen turns off 1-2 minutes later spotify completely shuts down. Does seem to be a developer of the app compatibility issue. I am in the same boat of needing a fix quickly or after 5 years will no longer be paying for spotify.... and Neil Young is an **bleep**, Lynard Skynard had it right in the 70's because no one needs him any how. But I do need my spotify fixed.
Note 20 ultra, android 12 with issues. The media control bar doesn't show current playing music. No way to pause skip current playing music, must force close app. Android auto in car no longer works with spotify, phone shows "spotify is trying to play" notification but nothing happens. Ever since the new Bluetooth control spotify app update came out it hasn't worked properly.
Add me to the list of users with this issue as well. Spotify app randomly stops playing, loses the media controls notification bar, drops out when playing on Bluetooth in the car etc.
Spotify devs should be able to test the app on a Samsung device with Android 12 and One UI 4.1 and spot these problems fairly easily and all being well, implement a fix soon. At the moment the app is hard to use. Force quitting the app will work for a short while, then it will start playing up again.
Add me to the list of frustration from buggy behavior on a Samsung device.
Tmobile Note 10 on Android 12 and One UI 4.1
This is not the first time that Spotify app becomes unstable after an Android update. Had similar but different problems last year and after several communications with CS who could not resolve the problem, and multiple reinstalls, an app update was released and 2-3 months of frustration were solved.
As a 10+ year subscriber who has always had a Samsung Note phone it is difficult to believe that all of the sudden these issues cannot be prevented upon OS releases.
Are you seriously suggesting that we users, that pay for spotify, contact Samsung when you have decided that your app is not working with the latest OS?
You are the developers.
You have found that your app is not working with latest OS.
YOU need this update so that your app can work to full performance.
Why the f**k should WE that are paying YOU report this to the manufacturer?!?! And the link you provided there is from a thread in january.
FIX THE ISSUE
Me too
I have the same issue like the others no media control after a while, music stops or says it doesn't play any when it does its frustrating for a 1400€ phone and a long time spotify user
Blaming the android 12 and ui 4.1 is incredibly dismissive and outright**bleep**. I'm up to date on my android and Spotify apps. The last os update was in February. The last Spotify update was April 5. If Spotify is putting out updates that are unsupported in the current OS version, then they shouldn't be updating unless the user is at the OS version they support. There's an obvious issue here that needs to be resolved and it isn't on the consumer to do so.
This isn't a Android 12 issue or Samsung issue. It's a Spotify issue. I have a Pixel 6 Pro and I have been running Android 12 for 6 months now with no issues. This issue just started happening a few days ago. Seemed to start happening when the new bottom bar design showed up for me. I'm on Spotify version 8.7.20.1261.
I am also having this issue with see ultra. It's ridiculous that you've requested users to contact Samsung for a fix. That is insane
I am running android 11 on a Galaxy a50 and having the same issue. My trouble started immediately after Samsung (not my carrier) had an update that added many QoL features, one of which was the new Media control interface. I have Bixby and their IoT program (smart things?) Disabled. The new Media control panel wants to control Spotify and will continue to run and attempt to control Spotify even after I close Spotify.
Do you read this Moderators? Get of ur asses and make devolopers fix this problem there are fitness instructors who they need this to work, me also working wirh music is a must for me, why do i pay 14 euros for a **bleep** app? Move on something better youtube music if doenst get fix in the next two weeks, i dont f care about ur f joe rogan podcast.
