If you’ve spent any time in the Spotify Community, you’ll know one of the most talked-about topics is shuffle. There are endless threads about hearing the same songs too often. There’s even a huge Community Idea for a “true shuffle” option that’s been around for a while.
From Thursday 13th November, Spotify will be rolling out a change for Premium users that I think many of you will appreciate. You’ll now be able to choose between two shuffle styles:
🎧 Fewer repeats
This one’s designed to keep things feeling fresh. It pays attention to what you’ve played recently and tries to reduce how often the same songs come around. You’ll still get randomness, but with less déjà vu. It’s a great way to rediscover tracks you haven’t heard in a while.
🎲 Standard
This is the standard shuffle mode that Spotify has used over the past few years. Every track gets an equal chance, completely at random. That means sometimes you’ll get repeats or the same artist a few times in a row. That's just how pure randomness works!
What’s really nice here is the choice. Some listeners love a truly random shuffle, while others just want more variety, and now you can pick what suits your mood.
The update is available now for all Premium users. If you don’t see the option yet, try restarting your app or checking for the latest update in your app store.
Spotify will continue to fine-tune the new “Fewer repeats” option, so if you give it a go and still feel like you’re hearing the same songs too often, let them know in the comments below or in the shuffle discussions here in the Community.
There’s also more about how these shuffle styles work on the Spotify Support site, and this Engineering Blog.
Personally, I’m really happy to see this change. Shuffle feedback has been around forever, and it’s great to see user voices leading to new options in the app. Can’t wait to see what everyone thinks of it!

Always happy to have more shuffle options. Thanks for the updated info!
i am yet to experience this. May update needed 😊
okay but will it really shuffle the playlist? recently we can't talk about shuffle playing. queue used to change each time i interacted with the playlist and now no matter what i do or if turn shuffle off and then on queue STAYS THE SAME
You may not have it accessible to you yet of course, but I had to toggle this on in the settings in the app under Settings > Playback. Scroll to the bottom and make sure “Include Smart Shuffle in play modes” is turned on. Then when you are in your playlist you either long press the shuffle icon and some selections with pop up for you at the bottom of the screen or you tap the shuffle icon until you get to the shuffle mode you want to play. This method of changing the modes in the playlist has been switching throughout the day. The three available modes are shuffle off, shuffle on, and smart shuffle. I hope this helps someone.
Still don’t have it here… iPhone 17 pro, latest app version from App Store, restarted phone and app multiple times. You say it’s available to all premium subscribers but that can’t be true. It’s not there.
Please add filter for AI generated music 😞
will it work? I have about 3500 songs in my 'liked' songs playlist. I recently drove for over 5 hours playing 'liked' songs. I heard several songs twice and at least 1 3 times. no way that is random!!
I've not seen songs repeating in playlists when shuffle mode is on, that said, I usually don't shuffle playlists except for the Liked Songs playlist, and I haven't had songs repeated when shuffling that playlist. Nevertheless, it's nice to see Spotify addressing an issue that I know others have had. Has this new shuffle mode been rolled out to Australian users yet? I don't see it in my Spotify app yet, and I am running the latest release. I'm sure we'll all get the feature in time, it can take a while for these things to apply to all users.
Well then, I just discovered something very interesting. I have access to this new shuffle option in the Spotify Desktop app on my PC, but not on my iPhone yet, I'm running the latest app version and I've restarted the app, but I still don't see it show up in the playback options. Curious, very curious. Well, I suspect eventually I will see it show up on my iPhone. I note that fewer repeats was selected by default on my desktop PC. Very interesting indeed.
I have the same issue and may dump Spotify. It is so annoying. I have tried not using shuffle, which would be fine. It still develops a loop. Even worse, I can’t turn off the lousy suggestions for songs that I would never pick on my own. How do I just play my list? Help me love Spotify again. I don’t want to break up, but the relationship just isn’t working at more.
I feel like it wasn’t really random before. I have a playlist with 78 hours of music in it. Every time I play it on shuffle I would hear the same exact songs while other songs in the playlist never get played. It didn’t really favor artists just certain songs. It definitely seemed like they were pushing some songs and suppressing others
With all the updates and new features being added, I would love to see more short video clips walking us thru the new features and the benefits of the new addition. Seems like it would make a lot more sense for those less techy people who still want to take advantage of the latest features!
Great, so are you finally getting rid of the extremely annoying "Smart Shuffle" feature that no one asked for and that makes the Shuffle button extremely laggy? Don't care about anything you're posting about, I just care about WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO GET RID OF THAT STUPID SMART SHUFFLE FEATURE. I am using desktop app on Mac.
Good news! Any timeframe on when this will be available on iOS devices? I see the new option on my Android phone, but not on my iPhone. macOS desktop app is also updated with the "fewer repeats" option (version 1.2.77.358.g4339a634).
Spotify app on iOS was updated on November 27 to version 9.1.0 no "fewer repeats" option there yet. Any idea when the iOS app gets this long awaited update too?
As_if_qwerty, on the iPhone at least you can turn smart shuffle off entirely within the playback settings, I have it turned on but I never activate smart shuffle. Is there not a smart shuffle on and off switch within the desktop app settings on the Mac? I don't think there is on Windows, but as I say, I just don't activate smart shuffle and actually use it.
Instead of rolling out useless features, how about finally making AI DJ and daylists available in ALL countries??? It’s been two years!!!
It was most needed feature, thank you.
> Is there not a smart shuffle on and off switch within the desktop app settings on the Mac?
No, nor on Android. I saw that switch in the screenshot above but it is only available on iPhone.
As of December 4 the iOS app has been updated to version 9.1.2 and "fewer repeats" is now the default option 👍
