UPDATE 3/14/15: This solution works for reverting to ANY previous version of Spotify. Just replace the application with the desired version, 0.8.5 or otherwise. I have successfully used this trick to revert to 0.9.15.27 and 0.8.5.133. Also, APPS continue to work in these previous version. Attached is a screenshot of 0.8.5.133 artist pages, clean, simple, cohesive, text a bit small, and SEARCH function still in tact. 0.8.5.133 also runs MUCH faster on my Windows and Mac machines.
The "Horrible update [0.8.8]" thread has begun to bury the work arounds for those of us NOT happy with the 0.8.8 update. Here is a guide to reverting to 0.8.5 for Mac. Spotify support has NOT provided a way for us to do this, despite my many attempts. Hopefully it will help some people who visit the forum.
If you already have upgraded to 0.8.8: (if you haven't upgraded already, start with step #3)
Let me know if you have any problems! This has worked for me on OS X 10.8.2. Thanks to th80 for the help on this!

There is another link in this post does that one work?

This file appears to be the correct version. I haven't verified it, but the version reads: 0.8.5.1356.gd1d40f3a
I will update the original post to link this download. Alternatively, if this version doesn't work I could zip and upload my actual Spotify.app and share that. Thanks for the link Peter!
Looks like it worked. Thanks and a High Five for you! and a Middle Finger to Spotify for screwing up my favorite program and forcing me to have to do this in the first place. I will not be suggesting this service to anyone for quite some time and I normally covert at least 1 person a day.
Hey.
I got as far as #6. There was no Spotify_new.archive and Spotify_new.archive.sig to delete. What should I do next??

If they aren't there then the app hasn't fetched for a new version yet. Make the dummy files and drop them in there anyway. This will avoid it from fetching the real update in the future.
thanks man,
finally!

when you close and open, it upgrades to the latest version, regardless.
I have been been purposely NOT restarting Spotify just in case ever since I reverted to 0.8.5 with these instructions. I just had to restart my computer for the first time in over a month and when Spotify opened on start-up it became 0.8.8.
So, that sucks. You have to do this every time you shut down Spotify. So, I'll probably be doing it once a month, i guess.
I noticed the sound quality is worse in 0.8.8. They must have made it worse to compensate for the slow buffering on 0.8.8. Not the sort of thing that causes me to want to upgrade to Premium.
Good afternoon:
I request your help, please help me!.
I tried several times, I can not avoid that v. 0.8.5. upgrading to V. 0.8.8. on my Mac OS X
1- Under the app and install. OK
2- To prevent the update: I look for the folder "Library" OMG! there is not. If a call "libreries" but contains no files "Spotify_new.archive" and "Spotify_new.archive.sig".
3- Seeking "Application Support / Spotify" and not find it.
What I can do? ¿? I can create files directly "Spotify_new.archive" and "Spotify_new.archive.sig"? What folder within "Spotiy.app" should copy?
Thanks in advance ... from support (support@spotify.com, @ SpotifyCares or, in my area, @ SpotifySpain) did not provide any Solve; limited to sending me to this forum. I hope someday you cobréis this somehow, because we are doing work that is not supporting the company, but with the difference that we follow religiously paying our subscription.
Thanks again, regards!
This seems to have worked great - thank you VERY much for posting clear instructions!
All of the issues I was having with the latest Spotify are resolved just by going back to 0.8.5. I don't understand companies that release software updates that remove tons of features and break things that were working just fine... What did they hope to gain?
I almost stopped my premium sub over this. And if they eventually block 0.8.5 without fixing all of the issues in the latest release first, I still might. I'd still use Spotify free, but I don't want to pay a company to downgrade my experience!

I feel that the instructions were rather clear. I would suggest trying to read them again. The Library folder can be found using the original instructions. It seems silly to literally retype them here.
The fact that they took the time to respond to someone who actually posted a workaround is mind boggling.
There are seemingly endless rows of problems on this board and you rarely hear anyone from Spotify actually responding with an answer that fixes the problem!
Just do what I did. I guarantee it absolutely works.
Cancel your subscription. I did the other day. I've had it. After 2 years or so, Spotify should be BETTER than it was. Instead, every update renders Spotify useless. If more people speak by canceling their subscriptions rahter than post here and wait for an answer that will NEVER come, maybe they'll do something!
As it is, hear those sounds? It's Apple about to send Spotify into the world of "remember RealPlayer?" land. Spotify had a chance. I gave them a lot of money over the past 2 years for 2 subscriptions. What they are doing with that money is beyond me. It's certainly not being used for creating a team of problem solvers. Like I've said in other posts, it's behavior is that of a Beta program. Only you are PAYING for it!!
Also, what is it with the response they gave you and the "they will NOT be supporting any reversions for paying customers". Think about that. Are they serious? I've paid for 2 years and get ZERO service with the LATEST version!!! How insane are they for saying this? Maybe they should just call version 0.8.5 version 0.9.1 now?
"And have essentially told us all "you're out of luck.... good luck on your own!"
So true. Seems the paying customers are working harder to improve Spotify than the Spotify Team!
No more for me. MOG works fine, without a glitch. Ever. Scrolling through the messages here should have heads rolling at Spotify's HQ's. It's inexcusable. But, as long as people pay, I expect nothing to be done.
Don't pay them. The bottom line is something I am SURE they well understand. So, speak their language.
Great. It helped to make Spotify work again on my Mac (10.7.5).
@Spotifyteam: the 0.9.0 version turned my computer to become devastatingly slower than my 20 year MS-DOS computer ever was. Hope you fix this problem. Can cost you a lot of customers. Next to that the "improvements" of the interface were note my cup of tea.

Lack of support for older systems (with no support) is shockingly becoming the norm it seems... glad it could help you out!
I did revert from 0.9 to 0.8.5. seems to work for now.
and I love your post more than chocolate !
Hi everybody out there still working on 'old Mac OS X , version 10 5 8....
It looks like the spotify update bug that caused us so much distress that we all moved to Deezer is fixed! At least I don't experience any problems anymore, using the old 0.8.5. version
Maybe Spotify webmaster can enlighten us some more?
Greetz JaBo
It dosent work for me. I did all excatly as you say but every time spotify restarts it auto update to 0.9. The I have to force shutdown becasue 0.9 freezes and re install again 0.8.5. I have to do this at home with mac osx and at work with windows 7. I hate spotify now.

Alternative method:
Assuming Spotify is installed, close it, open a terminal window and run this:
curl -OL http://upgrade.spotify.com/upgrade/client/osx-x86/spotify-autoupdate-0.8.5.1356.gd1d40f3a.tbz && tar -xf ./spotify-autoupdate-0.8.5.1356.gd1d40f3a.tbz -C /Applications/Spotify.app/ && mv ./spotify-autoupdate-0.8.5.1356.gd1d40f3a.tbz ~/.Trash/ && cat /dev/null > ~/Library/'Application Support'/Spotify/Spotify_new.archive.sig && cat /dev/null > ~/Library/'Application Support'/Spotify/Spotify_new.archive && chflags uchg ~/Library/'Application Support'/Spotify/Spotify_new.archive.sig && chflags uchg ~/Library/'Application Support'/Spotify/Spotify_new.archive && open /Applications/Spotify.appor simply download this and open the file inside it:

Thank you, worked like a charm!
Thank you very much !
Bit of a problem with OS X 10.8.3 - the folder is hidden. Spent a while learning how to reveal hidden files but Apple seem to think we don't need to access very many and they were simply not visible through Finder. Accidentally found them with Appcleaner and managed to follow your instructions. Thanks so much!
