spotify in browser not making sound

correct output selected, have reloaded webpage, no bluetooth device connected, mac not muted, still no sound even though track says it's playing

Does this only happen in the Web Player or in the desktop app as well? Can you let us know which browser you're using and if possible, can you test if this happens in other ones as well? You can also check for any pending browser updates and if you're using a VPN or any ad blocking extensions, it might be worth disabling them temporarily to see if that helps.

I'd also recommend clearing the browser's cache and flushing the DNS cache on your Mac. You should be able to do that by opening Terminal from Applications > Utilities and typing “sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder” and pressing Enter.
