I'm a relatively new user to Spotify, but I play music all day while working (as are most of us that are fortunate enough to be able to work from home during Covid), so because of the playlists and associated songs I select I have to believe Spotify runs an algorithm to better fine tune my listening preferences.

1) Is this not true?  Is it purely me selecting a pre-bundled playlist and the songs within are predetermined.

2) Are songs injected into the playlist via math associated with my previous listening?

So, what am I getting at?  I'm constantly on the hunt for new music.  What I'd really like is for Spotify to be able to play nothing but recent (last couple of years?) releases according to either my listening preferences, or even manually setting parameters for Spotify to use as a guide.  Give me a series of filters to select from.

The playlist would then auto-populate against the parameters.

Hey @Pladaad

Yes, Spotify uses algorithms to analyse your musical tastes and give you better suggestions. The Discover Weekly and Release Radar are purely algorithmic and so are the Daily Mixes, radio stations and suggestions at the end of your playlists.

If I understand right, you want to find more music based of what's in your playlists. You can simply click the three dots on the playlist and select "go to Playlist Radio".

Spotify will then feed an endless array of similar music to your speakers/headphones!

Have a nice day!

Hi Sebasty,

Thanks for the prompt response.

Great to know algorithm are being used.

However, I'm not wanting to search in my playlist, I want to search from the entire Spotify database. I should be able to do this by setting filters and/or search parameters according to my tastes.

You can customize your searches by using some tags, such as genre, label or year, and using multiple tags at once works too.

There isn't really a way to search specifically along your musical tastes. Spotify has left that task to algorithms. But using genre tags should generally help. 🙂

Check out the Advanced Search in this article!
