Hello,
I've got a problem with playing local files in spotify. After each song it stops playing. This weirdly enough is only the case for local songs and not for steamed songs.
I think it might have something to do with a windows update. When I found out, two days ago, I recovered my system to the state before the windows update, and then it worked again. Last night it automatically updated windows and same problem of not continuous playing occured again.
Someone with a solution? It is really annoying!
Cheers!

Hello David,
I would like to question you because:
=> Since I created this post, there were many exchanges and I don't know where is problem solving !
=> Other thing, my english is far from perfect, I'm afraid I do not quite understand all these messages.
So, I have to indicate that :
Today I am subscribed to Spotify 9.99 per month.
I completely reinstall spotify
I have not have the codecs listed, installed on my computer, I have no particular application, just VLC and WMP.
I have deleted all my MP3 and the library where they were stored, too.
I have recreated the library and put it back the mp3 ...
I spent time testing different settings
Conclusion nothing happens, I have to push "next" and "back" to start the mp3 next 😞
I am on a Windows XP and all my software like the drivers are up to date.
Here is a brief summary, and for me ... the problem continues.
Thank you very much for the help you can give me;-)

David, if you want to reproduce this issue., you could download any one of the Kid Cudi mixtapes on Datpiff.com, all of which give me this issue during playback. I haven't noticed it with any other file downloads from that website, except for Kid Cudi songs.
Just something to think about.
Consider it thought about.
We downloaded one of the Kid Cudi mixtapes from that website, and played them in both Windows 7 and Windows 8. We also tried all the different configurations of Hardware Acceleration, Crossfade, Gapless Playback we could think of. Tested different soundcards, and multiple settings on those soundcards.
Sadly, we're still unable to reproduce. It's certainly frustrating for me, as I want to wave a reproduceble version of this in front of someone's face just to try and find out what an earth is going on here.
Well, this thread would be a great thing to wave.
"Here's "X" users who have resorted to downgrading their Spotify Client in order to play local content. What have we changed in versions since, say 0.6, that would cause them to forsake all the great new features, in order to keep playing their local content?"
Feel free to reword as you see fit 🙂
Alright it definitely has something to do with your computers. I had this problem and was following this thread for a while, I was using the old spotify method. When I had to hard reset my computer (I.E removing everything, reconfiguring everything) Spotify started working again. I'm pretty sure the problem had something to do with codecs since they appeared when I installed one.
I'm fairly certain it is something to do with the way Spotify interacts with certain computers as well, since I had no trouble with it until I got a new Toshiba. However, I have no clue what codecs are, so unless it came installed with something else, I'm pretty sure that's not what's causing my problem. If you need remote access to a computer with a conflict, David, I'd also be willing to let you use mine.
I am running an up to date version of windows 7, the only extra programs I had installed other than Spotify and Dropbox was from the adobe cs5.5 master package so I don’t think there should be any extra codecs on this machine.
Everything was working fine until I tried to play an mpeg-4 file and nothing happen (they would play on windows media player)
The solution to allow me to play mpeg-4 files was to install QuickTime
Whilst playing mpeg-4's I have no problem with Spotify but it seems that after installing quick time I have to manually press next after every song that is not an mpeg-4.
If I uninstall Quick Time the problem is solved but then I can’t play mpeg-4's
I appreciate this might seem a bit long winded but bear with me. I've had the local files not playing continuously issue for quite a long time and have tried all the codec installs and suggested items to no avail. However today I managed to fix it by zipping the album I was trying to play using WinRAR and leaving the zip in the directory.
I was attempting to send an album to a colleague at work over Skype so I zipped it up to send it along. All the files are m4a and didn't run continuously on local files before, but after sending it I figured I'd give a track a listen and lo and behold, it played the entire album. I tried this on another album that I hadn't zipped and it didn't continuously play so I zipped that album and it somehow worked.
However, after I deleted the zipped version of the album, the problem happened again. Unfortunately zipping it up again doesn't seem to fix the problem a second time, and I've been unable to achieve it with any local files since. I appreciate this might seem coincidental or just plain strange, so if anyone else could try zipping an album they know doesn't work and then leaving the zip file in the folder and then attempt to play the album as normal and see if it works, that would be great. I have no idea why it would have that effect, but it certainly worked for me, albeit briefly.
I'm afraid making a zip int the directory didn't work for me.
However it seems too me that the problem is that Spotify can't get the information from the file (or perhaps can't even find it) since the length of the song isn't displayed. Thoughts on that?
Not sure if this is relevant but as described earlier when double clicking another local song it plays but I've noticed that double clicking the song that won't play does nothing. Perhaps this only has something to do with how Spotify handles playing the next song?
Another thing I'm curious about is if this first occurred when Spotify introduced crossfading or gapless playback?
I figured it might be a long shot/coincidental thing but figured it might be worth a try.
I've had this issue for months now. Have tried various fixes posted to no avail. I'm not going to pretend that I'll be able to isolate the problem with my system configuration so I'll just weigh in as an additional voice to let you guys know that this issue hasn't gone away. Planning a complete system re-install at some point down the line which I'm sure will fix it and annoyingly I'll have no idea what caused the problem.
Perhaps Spotify should find the newest reported version that doesn't have this problem (one of the 0.6s I think) and then figure out what changed between that version and the next version that could have had this effect.
Also having the same problem for the past month or two. This really needs to be fixed.....I can't listen to my mp3s without always having to go back to my computer and manually clicking next.
Add me to the list of users experiencing this exact problem. Have read through the entire thread, tried all the suggestions, but with no luck.
This continues to make my playback of playlists at home a miserable experience. Too bad. After 6+ months, I'm ending my premium subscription and jumping ship to a competitor. I invite fellow users to vote with their dollars accordingly. Ciao.
new version and still the same problem.

^ This.
This local files not playing thing is also a problem for me. Extremely frustrating as I have a vast library of local songs that I love to queue up sometimes. streaming works perfectly fine.
Edit: I can confirm downgrading to version 0.6.2.240 solves the local files problem completely. I really wish this issue would be fixed in the newer versions!
Edit 2: It seems to be possible to prevent this working version of Spotify updating to the newer broken versions. I force removed modify and write permissions for all users, including SYSTEM, Administrator, etc on the Spotify folder.
This in theory should deny newer versions overwriting the version already installed.
Nice tip about the permissions - though I kinda like using the new client, adding some new playlists, then downgrading 🙂
What we need is a script! Oh yes! /blows virtual dust off manuals
another new release
still the same issue.
251 days later.
Still same problem after the new .8.8.450 update 😞
Bump. Same issue here. I'm cancelling my subscription if this is not fixed with next release.
