UI Frequently freezes and buttons become unusable

When using the application for 15 minutes or so all the buttons freeze up and I am longer able to skip or pause any song, nor play any other song. I have to shutdown Spotify and it's process via task manager in order to use it again. I tried using compatibility mode for win 8 (Somebody told me that worked) but the issue remains.

Did you try a clean reinstall? 

I did but no result.
I also tried clearing the local cache but also with no result.

Could you let us know which version of the app you're experiencing those issues with?
Tip: There are two of them, one is downloaded from our website and you can get the other from the Microsoft app store (optimized for Windows use).
As there are slight differences in the two, I'd encourage you to try installing the one you don't currently have.


In case the issue persists with both, try the following steps:

Open Notepad as an administrator (right-click > Open as Administrator)

  • Go to File > Open, and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  • Choose All Files instead of Text Documents next to the File Name box
    1. You'll see a handful of files, pick hosts and click Open.
  • When the file is open, you will see a block of text with # in front of each line and might see entries like website.com127.0.0.1
  • Check for any entries with Spotify in the address
    1. Examples may look like weblb-wg.gslb.spotify.com0.0.0.0
  • If you do find any lines with Spotify, please remove them
  • Save your changes and restart Spotify
