Why am I getting this error whenever I try to sign into Spotify?

Whenever I go to sign in on my Windows Vista laptop, I am given the error "This app is restricted to Premium users only. (Error code: 409)." Is this due to the discontinuation of older versions of Spotify, or is it something else? Additionally, if it is due to discontinuation, why is it still possible to download these older versions from the Spotify website?
