how to change the output device in 2020 today.

all the old post talking about the changing output device is no longer support.

you guys changed the setting in some reason.

Please resume the "play back device" function!!!

Hey @bigbossbee 

If you're running Windows 10, the system itself allows to specify what audio output/input devices different apps would use.

To access this, do this:

1. Right-click on the speaker icon on your system tray
2. Select 'Open Sound Settings'

3. Scroll down to 'Other Sound Options' to click on 'App Volume And Device Preferences'.

That's it! Here you can choose what output Spotify should use. Windows will remember these settings.

Note: for Spotify to appear in the list of apps, you need to open it first and try playing some audio.

Spotify appears to detect when this is done and will periodically just start automatically skipping through every song if you are not using the PC's default playback device, saying that it is unable to play the songs at the moment.

Is there a solution that works more consistently?

I really don't understand why software entirely focused around audio is so resistant to me playing music through my headphones while the rest of my PC sounds play through speakers.

This does not work. Going in to 'App Volume And Device Preferences' and changing the output will causes Spotify to skip songs until getting the error "Spotify can't play this right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it." which also breaks because I can't even play local files. Once Spotify gets into this state, it can only be fixed by changing the device preference back to default, then quitting and reopening Spotify.

EDIT: I found the cause, it's the Twitch.tv player. When Twitch and Spotify are running they will always share the same audio output device.
I have tried Audio Router, EarTrumpet, and the Windows 10 device preferences, but when any Spotify player is playing music (web or desktop), and any Twitch stream is open (web or desktop), they will both output to the same audio and any attempt to change the audio output will fail and/or crash that app.
