My Question or Issue

I cannot access the spotify web player through Chrome

  • Does not work in incognito mode either.
  • All web settings have been reset, cache and cookies cleared.
  • Checked Protected Content settings are set to ON (Chrome/settings)
  • Latest build: v69.0.3497.100 (Official 32 bit)
  • Does work through Edge (surprisingly!).
 Any ideas?

Hey @dparnell

The Protected Content setting on Chrome has two switches:

chromeprotection.PNG

For the web player to work properly, both settings must be enabled. 🙂

If that didn't help, there's another possible cause:

Edge does not seem to read the hosts file while other browsers do. There may be entries in the file that may be causing this issue, so I'd also suggest trying this:

1. open Notepad as an administrator (right-click - Open as Administrator)
2. go to File - Open and navigate to

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

3. Choose "All Files" instead of "Text Documents" next to the File Name box. You'll see a handful of files. Pick hosts and click on Open.
4. The file is opened. You will see a block of text with # in front of each line and might see entries like

0.0.0.0 website.com
127.0.0.1 website2.com

Check for any entries with spotify or fastly in the address. Examples may look like:

0.0.0.0 weblb-wg.gslb.spotify.com
0.0.0.0 prod.b.ssl.us-eu.fastlylb.net

(and any variations inbetween)
5. If you do find any, you can delete the line. You can also add a # in front of the line, that's 'commenting out'.
6. Save your changes. Restart Spotify.

You can also try removing all lines to see what happens.

Let me know how you get on 🙂

Thanks for your suggestions - both switches are on in the protected content
settings, and my hosts file is completely empty.

Are you using any addons in Chrome? If yes, try disabling them.

Also, did the web player use to work before?

You can try restarting the router. Clearing DNS cache might be helpful too, see this OpenDNS guide on how to.

(guide for Windows 8 works for Windows 10 too)

Keep me posted 🙂

Hi Sebasty,

No addons running, and this worked fine about a month ago. I have flushed the dns as you suggested, but still no luck.

Edge continues to be working fine, although I have dislike it as a browser.

Thanks for your response
