[AutoPlay] Option to toggle Autoplay on/off across all devices/platforms

The Autoplay setting isn't working for connected devices and the web player. We need the Autoplay setting to work the same as it does on desktop and when playing on the phone.

Updated on 2023-02-07

Hey folks,

The "Autoplay" setting was recently updated. The single "Autoplay" setting in the desktop and mobile apps will now enable or disable Autoplay across all devices on your account. This change makes it easier to manage instead of there being 2 different settings.

You only need to change the Autoplay setting in one of the apps, either desktop or mobile, and it will apply to your account on all devices including the Web Player and Spotify Connect devices.

You can read the support article for more information about the Autoplay feature.

Seriously. Pure idiocy.

I have a question: While I understand this update to the settings for a global toggle will take some time, couldn’t you implement a faster, if temporary fix right now? Surely if you’ve already changed the global default to autoplay on, you could just as easily change the global default to autoplay off, at least till the update rolls out. I don’t think very many people would complain that autoplay stopped working. People are upset that autoplay is on at all (for web player/connected devices), which was never the case previously.

Dude, speak for yourself. I actually enjoy Autoplay SOMETIMES to get a nice mix of songs while I sleep. *Prepares for hate comments* I enjoy listening to Albums and Songs too, but sometimes it gets tedious to constantly ask my Google Assistant for or typing in a new song. The problem was never that Autoplay itself is trash, it's the FORCING Autoplay on us was trash. It kinda sucks that they caved in and just deleted Autoplay completely, although it's just temporary, because I was the 1% who is actually a fan of it. But I understand if it's only temporary until they make a global fix to it. Hopefully we'll get a proper toggle for Web Player, Devices, and Mobile so that people who dislike it and those who like it could all be content. TBH, I probably wouldn't care for Autoplay either if Spotify had a proper way to queue up Albums and Songs with the Google Assistant, but that's another Idea...

Nonsensical change, and frankly it's patronising forcing the community to treat this as a feature-request and not what it really is - a bug.

Forcing people to listen music they don’t want is the worst idea ever.  Very poor listening experience.  Thanks to bringing back the possibility to taking off autoplay permanently, everywhere I use Spotify.

This "Fix" seems to have broken my autoplay. I used to love asking google for a song for my son and then his music would continue to play from there but it no longer works. I have checked and autoplay is enabled on my desktop app. Autoplay was our most used feature in the house. Without it we probably would not use your service

Can you please assist?

I love streaming music. I am forever bothered by wonderful albums on streaming platforms that now include extra songs. This feels like a continuation of that blunder. Sometimes a set amount is better than infinite. We already have the option of selecting a "radio station" based on an artist or album if we want forever music. Please also allow us to opt out of never ending steams of algorithmically chosen muzak. Thank you for considering.

Even though you are "working" the effort to "fix" this, I don't think that was respectful to have impose this to your suscribers. Plain stupid idea.

I'm trying right now YouTube Music, and it is not bad at all. The YouTube Music suscriber have the choice to enable / disable the autoplay option for albums and playlist, but not for the videos when using to a mobile. As a music listener, I'm fine with that.

So right now, I'm at a crossroad : my Spotify subscription with be renew in a few days, and I have a free month tryout with YouTube Music.

I don't understand why you changed this. Such a stupid idea. If we want to enhance our playlists we'll do so. Totally ruins my bedtime playlist as I then get to sleep after a few songs then wake up in the middle of the night as I realise music is still playing. It's a carefully curated list that's only supposed to last 20mins.

I'm on the other side that would often use autoplay with my Google Home speakers as a discovery tool, akin to starting a 'song radio' in the app, including when using it to sleep (I'd just set a sleep timer, i.e. "play xyz for 30 minutes")... and now it seems like I can't enable autoplay on my connected devices. This means it always just plays one song if I request a song and stops.

Neither side can seem to win with this one. 😛

Thanks for the sleep timer idea. I'll try that tonight, already altered my routine. Hopefully it works. After going to bed at 11pm last night and waking up at 2.30am, I couldn't get to sleep properly until 4.45am. Really quite annoying.
