[Desktop] Option if Spotify links should open native Spotify app or Webplayer

Seems like Spotify keeps pushing this issue aside because not enough people are complaining about it. I've actually seen a good amount of posts on the community boards about it but none of them seem to have gained traction with the powers that be, claiming its a non-issue and the post gets closed. I disagree, wholeheartedly.

Please bring this option back! I don't use the web player... ever. And, I don't want to now have to start copying and pasting the links into spotify app. Call me lazy. The advanced settings used to have the option to have links open in the desktop app. But that option has recently disappeared. Seems like a very obvious and useful feature, and just strange to suddenly remove that functionality.

My friends and I are always trading spotify links via text and emails and it's incredibly frustrating that it now doesn't automatically open in the desktop app like it used to. If I say pretty please, with a link to a cherry on top, would you consider this a legitimate request?

Hey folks,

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions on this one.

You should now have the option to open song links directly in the Spotify app!

Cheers 🙂

I upgraded to a duo account for my partner only to find that any links to music I send them are not opening properly in their app - it defaults to the in-browser player. This is unacceptable! I very well may be canceling my account if this continues to be an issue.

I cannot believe that opening the browser is considered the "expected behavior".

This is really frustrating

Why is this still not implemented? It's very frustrating that e.g. WhatsApp web's links open Spotify web player instead of the Spotify App.

Are there actually people who don't install the app and prefer playing music via the browser? Who are these monsters and why does Spotify cater to users who can't be bothered to install their desktop app? I find this completely ludicrous. Those of us who install the app should be considered Spotify power users and the slobs who listen to music in Chrome are casual users whose needs/wants are secondary to ours.

Yes! This is SO obnoxious. I've never had an app (desktop or web) where you DON'T get prompted to open in the app once the webpage loads up. If you have it, it tells you to "Open App" if you don't it asks you if you want to "Download App." The reason companies have desktop and mobile apps is to give the user a better experience. Now you're actually making it worse for those people who have your app by allowing them to have Spotify desktop app open and playing music .... but also allowing a web browser to also open and play music over it. Yes, you could paste the link, but the fact that there isn't an easy way to transfer from the web browser to the app with a click of a button is baffling. This is like 10 year old technology!

I feel like this would make sense as some sort of setting somewhere.

Please please fix this. I use Spotify for work and it is a HUGE waste of time to have to manually copy and paste the link from web to desktop every single time, especially when going through 20 to 30 links at a time. At the very least make it a setting that the user can change.

Novophoenix

How is this still an issue? It makes no sense. It's almost as if you guys don't want us to use the desktop app.

Make this happen!

Can we please fix this? I am certain years ago it used to be an option.

It makes zero sense to use the web browser version automatically and as your only option.

Very frustrating
