Make entire play queue editable

There's currently two queues in Spotify:

  • The editable queue. ("Queued tracks")
  • The locked queue. ("Next tracks")

If you press the Skjermbilde-2015-04-10-20.52.53.png queue button with tracks in both lists, you can see that these two queues follow each other. The editable queue always plays first.

The problem is having a locked queue at all.

You can't empty it without interrupting playback, and you'll have to use a workaround to do so. You can't reorder it or add or delete songs. After finishing the editable queue, Spotify always continues playback from the locked queue.

The workaround is starting playback at the very last item on a page. The locked queue will then have no further items. Then you can continue by purely using the queue right-click function instead of double-click or enter. This adds items to the editable queue. These tracks can then be reordered and deleted as you wish.

This UI behaviour is, however, not very user-friendly and quite frankly really annoying. It's also very unconventional having two queues in a music player. I've never seen any other software using either a dual-queue system or a locked queue system.

Here's a good implementation suggestion from user Styrke:

----

Google Play Music's queue system is really easy to understand and use. Just do what they do.

I can describe it by three (3) easy bullets:

  • Double clicking a song starts playing it and adds the rest of the list that the song came from to the queue. (The queue gets overwritten)
  • Right click one or more songs to add them to the top ("play next") or the bottom ("add to queue") of the queue.
  • Everything in the queue can be removed or rearranged by drag-and-drop

----

EDIT: I updated the terminology to match the new Spotify. Items are no longer yellow and white, but are now under separate headings and in the same color instead.

Hey everyone, now you can edit your Play Queue on your Desktop, Android and iOS device. You can add songs to 'Up Next', remove songs and clear the queue. Thanks for continuing to bring us great ideas!

I have to put my phone into airplane mode to disable the suggested playlist  that comes on without my permission.  I HATE THIS.  Here I am  performing a song from my playlist and and when it is over I get WinChester Cathedral starting up.  Why can't I turn of the suggested playlist???   I am a long time paying customer.  I deserve better.

I've been struggling with this. I try to delete a song from the playlist, yet it continues playing the song even though I have it set to not play songs outside of the playlist. How do I make it stop playing these songs?

Spotify update says: "Hey everyone, now you can edit your Play Queue on your Desktop, Android and iOS device. You can add songs to 'Up Next', remove songs and clear the queue."

Just how do you clear the queue on Android? Playing the last song and skipping is not a solution, it's a workaround, a hack.

So... I empty the Next Up list and the Now Playing track comes to the end. Mysteriously the previously emptied tracks reappear on the Next Up list (although, thankfully, they don't play). Is it really so difficult to add an "Empty Queue" button or option that actually empties the queue and doesn't refill it? I often want to play only one track.

I want to listen to one album, and only one album. When they album is done playing, I want spotify to stop.  This is obvious and basic.  Please make it possible!!!!  I have spent half an hour reading through comments only to find that there isn't a solution!  If you do not fix it, I will cancel my spotify account.

On the desktop app (for macOS) the remove fuction does not work. Once you click on "Remove from the queue" the track still remain there. Is it a bug?? ThanksSchermata 2018-09-21 alle 18.08.28.png

So now this was removed??? Such a good, simple idea...

No, it's not implemented at all. To be able the edit any of the queues is good, but it still doesn't solve the main issue described in this idea. I simply cannot wrap my head around this, as this is basically the most frequent use-case a typical user have ever encountered if he/she used any media player software in the past 30+ years:

- you've got music playing, and N items in the (one and only) queue, awaitng to be played (note that already this state is not easily achievable in spotify if you want N=0*)

- you're browsing your library/suggestions/release radar/whatever and stumble upon a song

- you want this song to be played after your N items have finished playing (it is a one-click solution in any player, but almost not possible at all in spotify**)

- alternatively, you want this song played right after the current song (this is the only method that is currently implemented)

- rarely, you want this song to be played after x songs (x<N) has been played from the queue (this is achievable by queueing it first, then editing "next in queue", which is ridicoulusly complicated compared to a simple drag&drop implemented in almost any media player).

*the main problem with the "next up" or 'locked' queue is already apparent here: you cannot control the exact amount of songs you want to be played

**it's only possible if you start using the program by queueing the very first track you want to hear, and keeping the "next in queue" alive, so that it it never jumps to the "next up' queue.

Is all what I've described really that hard to grasp, or have none of the developers ever used Winamp, Foobar, or Windows Media Player (pre-win10 version) ever in their lives?

Doesn't work. I would very much like to have the opportunity to clear the whole queue! YT Music and Tidal have this option.

Please Spotify cmon!
