[Music] Local FLAC Playback

A member of spotify team said to separate the FLAC idea post, into FLAC local playback and FLAC streaming. Someone else can create a FLAC streaming post, as I'm only after local playback. The original post with the 2 ideas in one post is here.

Vote for this post if you want LOCAL PLAYBACK OF FLAC FILES ONLY.

WHY WE NEED SPOTIFY TO PLAY OUR FLAC COLLECTION
Spotify already plays ALAC, all be it with stability problems, but what we really need is local FLAC playback because FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless audio encoding. 7digital has recently started selling FLAC yet spotify can't play them. Why not???

The most commercially successful band on the planet (The Beatles), have released official remastered versions of all albums in 24bitFLAC format on a usb device.

Numerous bands have sold albums in FLAC format through their websites. FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless encoding, so please start supporting local playback of FLAC.

Another idea that is important to me is fixing the appalling "set the same volume level for all tracks", which doesn't take into account the subtle volume transients of an album that audio engineers spend hours working on. The following volume normalization method retains the intended volume differences as part of the album.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming to the Ideas Exchange and sharing your feedback.

We're happy to inform you that this is now possible, so you can enjoy your local FLAC files through Spotify! Make sure to add them to Your Library, if you haven't already.

Thanks again for making Spotify better!

This is a pretty simple request. Lots of us have substantial FLAC libraries. Arguments about audio quality aside we'd jsut like to be able to play them alongside spotify content.

Wow. This has been a request for 3 years and still nothing. Pretty disappointing that Spotify has ignored this request for so long. Maybe one of their competitors will add that support so I can drop my subscription with Spotify and take my $120 a year elsewhere.

Spotify said FLAC was not a common format. This is only true for listeners who don't appreciate or can't hear good quality music! Anyone with a half decent sound system is most likely using flac or higher quality .wav files. Spotify seem to promote streaming at 320kbps as being high quality. Crap! I have a lot of 24bit / 192KHz sampled media. At 9216kbps THIS is high quality! The Spotify player is ok and would certainly be enhanced by having options to play higher bitrates. To those looking to make it their only player, I'd suggest a media server and something like JRiver as the indexing / streaming service. Unless Spotify is going to handle any 24bit files, you will run out of capability to play anything really impressive, and will have to go to another streamer anyway! So for playing low to average quality music, I enjoy Spotify and usually run it Bluetooth to my car audio. Sometimes will stream from local songs on my iPhone to my Naim player, and it sounds ok, but for anything serious, Spotify is not the tool for the job!

Status changed to: Not Right Now
Updated: 2015-11-17

Hey everyone. We wanted to jump back in this thread as it hasn't received an update in a while. We are definitely keeping an eye on this idea and we know it has continued to grow since originally being posted in 2012. At the moment the status is still 'Not Right Now' but we are passing your feedback on internally. If there's an update on this anytime soon we will let you all know right here. Thanks!

Please implement this, preferably with the ability to sync it offline to android devices too (as most of the newest android devices, e.g. galaxy s6, support the FLAC format)! ❤️

With 20 pages of comments since 2012 I am sure that I am not expressing anyting that has not already been said, but for at least the last year I have been ripping my collection and any new items exclusively in FLAC, so my local library is increasingly unplayable by the Spotify app.  Of course this causes me to invest more time in other players and playlists and not use the Spotify app.  I am a paid subscriber and so you already have my money, but it would seem that keeping the "free" users in your app and attracting advertising dollars would be beneficial and fit the Spotify business plan.  As a paid/premium subscriber I will probably jump ship if there is an alternative service that offers high quality streaming AND local FLAC playback (along side MP3 and the other popular formats).

Nearly 4 years and spotify still ignores this simple demand!!!!

This month will be the last month premium subscriber.

As it is Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. day; I have a dream... That Spotify will one day support local FLAC playback.

I have been a premium subscriber for a couple of years, and I am really disappointed that Spotify still refuse to support local FLAC playback...
