[Music] Local FLAC Playback

A member of spotify team said to separate the FLAC idea post, into FLAC local playback and FLAC streaming. Someone else can create a FLAC streaming post, as I'm only after local playback. The original post with the 2 ideas in one post is here.

Vote for this post if you want LOCAL PLAYBACK OF FLAC FILES ONLY.

WHY WE NEED SPOTIFY TO PLAY OUR FLAC COLLECTION
Spotify already plays ALAC, all be it with stability problems, but what we really need is local FLAC playback because FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless audio encoding. 7digital has recently started selling FLAC yet spotify can't play them. Why not???

The most commercially successful band on the planet (The Beatles), have released official remastered versions of all albums in 24bitFLAC format on a usb device.

Numerous bands have sold albums in FLAC format through their websites. FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless encoding, so please start supporting local playback of FLAC.

Another idea that is important to me is fixing the appalling "set the same volume level for all tracks", which doesn't take into account the subtle volume transients of an album that audio engineers spend hours working on. The following volume normalization method retains the intended volume differences as part of the album.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming to the Ideas Exchange and sharing your feedback.

We're happy to inform you that this is now possible, so you can enjoy your local FLAC files through Spotify! Make sure to add them to Your Library, if you haven't already.

Thanks again for making Spotify better!

Many people have flac as a standard format for local files. This is probably the most used lossless format today. Please add support for FLAC as local files!

Just wanted to add my support for this thread. I currently rip all of my music to FLAC via EAC and have a large library of 24 bit files from Bowers-Wilkins Society of Sound and I really hope that some day in the future Spotify adds the ability to play these lossless files locally. Currently I flip between using Songbird to play it natively on my desktop, and I use a Sonos Connect to stream it to my Hi-Fi. It would be a bit easier to have the local FLAC playback in Spotify so that the user community could have more diverse playlists within one application - certainly not expecting Spotify ever to stream lossless ( though you never know - look at the new compression 4k video uses) but it would be appreciated from an intergration standpoint.

As mentioned by the Spotify team itself, reading flac locally is rather easy to implement.

Also, iTunes doesn't support flac, and it would be a clear competititve advantage if Spotify was able to read them. (Apple is unlikey to support flac, as they try to push their own Apple-Lossless Audio Codec)

Cut us some FLAC.

Streaming lossless is wasted bandwidth for the time being. Even 160Kbps MP3 encoded with a modern encoder is practically transparent for most music samles.

FLAC (and possibly ALAC) could be added for local file playback pretty easily. FLAC is open source with a friendly license. Please add this to Spotify (kudos added)

Yes, please add FLAC for local playback - I was just highly surprised why my collection shrinked so much after adding it to Spitify only to discover the reason - lack of FLAC support!

I have a ton of local FLAC files... and i want to be able to play them in the same player!

im getting ready to switch back to songbird

Support FLAC in whatever capacity you can now until ISP bandwidth can support streaming it without problems.  Because you know that as soon as bandwidth is where it needs to be, there will be a company started by a few audiophiles, who will get financed by some rich audiophile (as most are pretty well off) who will do it.  Hey, maybe I should start building the framework now for that very company, hmmm......  🙂

my entire collection is in flac, i have a lot of albums which you don't have on spotify and with music where flac makes a massive difference (the beatles, pink floyd etc)
