[Other] Exact release date across all platforms

Spotify has exact release date information for albums - it can be viewed in the mobile app (at least under iOS, v8.5.41).

Using the official desktop app, however (macOS, v1.1.24.91.g4ca6d5eb) you only get the year.

Why the disparity? I would have thought that, if anything, the desktop app would contain more granular information, while the mobile app would contain more of a summary.

Year is not very granular at all - artists can do a lot in a year, and fans sometimes like to know at least the month they released something, if not also the day.

Thank you for reading

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and voting to make this happen.

We're happy to announce that this feature is now available. All you need to do is hover over the song's release year: this will show you the full song's release date 🙂

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community!

If you hover over the release date in the new 2021 desktop app update or the web player for several seconds, the full release date will show in a popup tooltip. They should just show the full release date by default. The tooltip is slow and small.

So this feature has now been implemented on Windows, it appears, but not on Mac.  Why?

Honestly, Spotify, this should be so simple.  There have been several threads about it.  Why has it taken so long to address this, and now the fix is not across platforms?

ETA: Will that was fast! LOL. New update came through within minutes of my post above, and the full release date shows up on my Mac.  Thanks Spotify!

Status changed to: Under Consideration

Hey @Bram_V we're happy to say this is currently Under Consideration. We're taking a look at the current metadata we have and improving it so we can perhaps roll out something like this.  We'll let you know if we have any other info around this, thanks!

This feature worked perfectly for me up until 2 days ago... My desktop program is no longer showing the exact release dates as of 24/10/2017. Mobile program still works perfectly fine. I don't understand why something this small but vital would be omited.

Excuse me, sorry Meridith, but the highly requested feature full release date on desktop was finally enabled since August 2017, and now I notice since last desktop application update, that the date is reverted to showing only the year? Its insulting to now report you are happy to announce this feature you just removed again is now under consideration when its been requested for YEARS and actually silently existed until like a week ago.

Happy to say I am ready to cancel my premium and switch my subscription to google where your previously existant features like showing full release dates and folder-shuffle are not such monumentally challenging stretches of 2017 programming talent.

The Spotify developers regularly look for features that users like in order to remove them. Bonus points if it's one that had been added just a few weeks prior.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but it's difficult not to around here.

How come this all of a sudden changed? This uesd to be a staple resource..

I voted for this since it's gone on desktop as well

Spotify, this is bizarre.  After finally showing the full release date in the desktop app, you reverted back to showing the year of release only, without providing a real explanation for doing so.  Not only that, it looks like you deleted all the comments showing that this feature was actually implemented and then removed.  For all those visiting this thread for the first time, it would appear that you only recently put this idea into consideration, when that is not the case at all.

Do you have any explanation for this?  For removing the feature?  For deleting replies to obscure the fact that this feature was added and then removed?

Good questions. Hopefully @meahtenoha will be able to clarify.

The dreaded word improvements worries me, though. Still waiting for lyrics to be improved.

I want release dates back. How else do I know how fresh my jams are?
