[Other] Exact release date across all platforms

Spotify has exact release date information for albums - it can be viewed in the mobile app (at least under iOS, v8.5.41).

Using the official desktop app, however (macOS, v1.1.24.91.g4ca6d5eb) you only get the year.

Why the disparity? I would have thought that, if anything, the desktop app would contain more granular information, while the mobile app would contain more of a summary.

Year is not very granular at all - artists can do a lot in a year, and fans sometimes like to know at least the month they released something, if not also the day.

Thank you for reading

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and voting to make this happen.

We're happy to announce that this feature is now available. All you need to do is hover over the song's release year: this will show you the full song's release date 🙂

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community!

If you hover over the release date in the new 2021 desktop app update or the web player for several seconds, the full release date will show in a popup tooltip. They should just show the full release date by default. The tooltip is slow and small.

This is not yet available on Linux. Will a new build including this functionality be released soon?

I agree that it would be very much preferable to not have to position the mouse on a tiny area and wait (I don't know what your screenreader support is like, but this seems useless if you need accessibility features), but something is better than nothing.

I'll additionally note that until you scroll and collapse everything but the title, this year's new UI devotes several hundred times more screen real estate to white space than any line of the release details.

Hello, I fully join your asking / suggestion.

Indeed, there is about more than one year I think, that this information (full album's release date) doesn't appear any more under my Windows environment. I uninstalled Spotify from my mobile phone, so I did'nt know that this function works on it.

Bye.

The Linux app is not actively supported on the same schedule as the Windows and Mac desktop apps. So from time to time the Linux app will be updated, but in general it will be slower to get the changes you see in the Windows and Mac desktop apps. You can try using the web player. The web player has the same infrastructure as the Windows and Mac desktop apps but with less features.

From the Linux download page:

"Spotify for Linux is a labor of love from our engineers that wanted to listen to Spotify on their Linux development machines. They work on it in their spare time and it is currently not a platform that we actively support. The experience may differ from our other Spotify Desktop clients, such as Windows and Mac. You can tell us what you think and ask other users for help at the Desktop (Linux) board in The Spotify Community forum."

Hopefully you'll see this change eventually!

For the record - the latest Linux release (1.1.67.586.gbb5ef64e 2021-09-01) now have the same hover functionality to show the full date that windows/mac/web have had for some time. 🎉

At one point the desktop app (mac) displayed the specific release date (day, month, year) of whatever single/album/ep you were viewing, in the bottom left-hand corner I believe, near where the record label is currently listed. It is still featured on the iOS version, so I really don't understand why it was removed from the desktop app. I'm begging you to add this back to the desktop app. I refer to release info constantly for work, but more than that it's a general point of interest for listeners & fans, and it makes no sense why it's suddenly been removed and from the more interactive version of the app (desktop). Please, please, pretty please, give us our release dates back....thank you

Good news!

In the new desktop app version 1.1.86 and the Web Player, you can now see the full release date (month, day, year) at the bottom of the release page just like you can in the mobile app. You can still hover over the year at the top of the release page as well to see the full release date.
