[Amazon Alexa] Swap Spotify accounts without changing Alexa account

I have a Spotify Family account for myself and my wife

I have an alexa unit in every room, every unit is using MY amazon account as all the lights and home automation can only be setup on one Amazon account

I want to play Spotify in the room i’m in

My wife wants to play her music in a different room

Both myself and my wife also want to use the home automation whilst playing music, eg, turning on the lights

This can be done using Apple music and Amazon music but Spotify require to swap to a different spotify account for the other person

To swap to a different spotify account means changing the Alexa profile of the alexa device and then all the home automation no longer works from that device.

Please can you allow both myself and my wife to play music in different rooms WITHOUT having to change the Amazon Alexa account

It would be great if I could say ‘Alexa, play spotify from Trevors account’ and my wife could say in a different room, at the same time, ‘Alexa, play spotify from Jackie’s account’

This is not a duplicate of other suggestions, I’ve checked and anything close was raised before the ability to swap alexa accounts was implemented. Swapping alexa accounts is only a work around and is not a solution to this problem.

Many people want this feature and your chat team said I should raise it here

Here is a link to the forum, lots of people are leaving spotify because only spotify do not support this feature, you guys need to catch up

https://community.spotify.com/t5/Premium-for-Family/FAMILY-AND-ECHO-ALEXA/m-p/4900618#M26242

From my research it seems there is talk about Spotify only has one concurrent music stream whereas Apple and Amazon music have multiple streams, but please can you improve on this, the thread above was started over 18 months ago, something should be done to improve on this issue

Again, please don’t write this off as a duplicate and do nothing/say it relates to a 3rd party, people still want this feature

Thanks

Folks, just a quick update on this.

Spotify say this

The Community team talks with various other Spotify teams several times a month about ideas with over 500 votes (our criteria for being a top idea). It’s from these meetings that we apply one of the following statuses to each idea….

This idea has reached over 500 votes so I asked on chat for timescales/what will happen next and was told to keep an eye on this thread.

That really sounded open ended!

As the person on chat could only deal with app and account queries, I was told to also contact the support team to get action on this

So as well as voting for this issue (please continue),

Spotify need to keep up with Apple and Amazon and fix this issue - with your help we might just get this solved!

Still no solution from Spotify.

Spotify, at least give us some expectations so we don't have to ask the same questions over and over....

  • Is this something you're working on...or not?
  • Is it in the near term future...or something we shouldn't expect to see anytime?

Firm promises are great, but I think everyone would understand if your answers need to be a bit vague.

However, the silence...that's the disappointing part.

Call me a cynic, but I can't see Spotify ever doing anything about this. They just announced 1,500 job layoffs so are going to be even more pressed for developer time than before.

Also, the folks like you and me who actually took the time to complain about this particular feature/gap/bug represents such a tiny portion of their paying user base that Spotify just don't care enough. The managers have been prioritizing other work and will keep doing so. Those were weasel words when they said back in June 2021 that they'll look into it. This is their boilerplate answer to similar complaints if you look through the community forum.

Most people on this thread are still paying them for the service so not enough are voting with their feet and going to another service as it'll mean re-building their libraries. I just can't be bothered with that hassle, anyway.

I still think the Alexa framework is the one that has to improve as it lacks the feature that would enable us to add additional Spotify credentials - as it is Alexa already has a voice recognition "engine" and knows who is the person talking...

as I mentioned, earlier I moved to HomeKit+HomePod+youtube Music - the home app has profiles for each person in the house - kids included!  Each person from their iPhone/ipad can then set their profiles to their own preferred music service and via voice the speakers would do the search and pull the song from wherever…

It’s not perfect, alexa can do a lot of things better than homekit but at least now anybody can play their songs anywhere, simultaneously!

I understand business decisions may dictate implementation of user requests, but the idea in this and other similar posts is so prevalent that I struggle to understand how it hasn’t been given more attention by Spotify. As a recent installer of multiple Echo devices, I am now contemplating a move away from Spotify because this feature is lacking, despite having been a longtime Premium Family subscriber. If you want to retain your existing subscriber base, and improve efficiency and bottom line as you’ve indicated recently, I recommend listening to the thousands and thousands of subscribers that have asked for multi-device streaming for years.

This request alone has almost 9000 votes yet was denied and closed?!? Wow.

@Xtotoy

Other music services are able to use voice recognition to automatically switch accounts.  Amazon has made the API available for that some years ago.  Spotify refuses to implement it into their Alexa skill so that we can do it too.

So, it's 2024, and the status hasn't changed in 2.5 years.  Over 1000 votes, now!  I went with Amazon Family Unlimited because it just works so much better on echo devices.  There are a few songs that are missing now and then, and their voice profiles are **bleep**, meaning they don't exist despite advertising them as part of the plan.  You cannot use household accounts with echo devices, only the main account for the home.  Anyway, I was just coming back to see if Spotify made any improvements, but the idea is stale.  Has anything changed?

Spotify, what are you doing? It's been years Nothing. Not cool. Please have the decency to just tell everyone it's not on your roadmap and maybe we can stop hoping. You used to be such a great service, but this is a deal breaker for me.

I would at least respect you if you were honest about it.

Jonfitt

It has been years and years and there's still no good way for a family to use Spotify on Alexa. It's just ridiculous.

Since it seems Spotify isn't interested in more than €200/year, I’ll be switching to an Amazon family plan as soon as my single-user account is up for renewal. The playlists will be transfered quickly, as Amazon has a service for that now. Sorry Spotify, but the last one gets the short end of the stick.

Deal breaker. I’m moving to Amazon unlimited which supports this
