Lyric Font and Background Color Accessibility Settings

Hello!

As a longtime Windows Desktop Spotify App lover, I think it'd be great if there could be some accessibility settings for the lyrics screen on the desktop app!

I'm disabled and have several conditions causing visual impairments but I love learning songs so I can sing them by heart, especially in other languages, as it's a great way to take my mind off some of my more severe illnesses. So more often than not I have my lyrics screen open on my other screen to learn all I can.

But this recent update changed the font/background color and has really made it a lot harder to use the lyrics screen as much as I did previously.

Visually, I can see clearly. But certain font colors on certain backgrounds can extreme strain to my eyes and basically makes the lyrics screen unusable for me after this recent update (12/13 as I write this), as it causes long lasting strain and pain to my eyes, even though it technically is just a small aesthetic change to others.

Previously, the font would stay black until getting to the lyric being sung, which made it more accessible for me to read for long periods as it was less strenuous. Sometimes the background color made it a little more difficult, but I'd manage.

But now that they've become a lighter shade of whatever the background is, which usually is something much darker than it was before, it's in such a specific way that the contrast is too much for my vision on almost every song and I really can't look at it for more than maybe 10 seconds at a time, when I used to stare for the full length of a song or even repeat it multiple times. Or sometimes the unread and read lyric colors are too similar that I can't tell them apart due to previous strain

(see 3rd pic attached below)

Example of the differences with this update

Before update, vs after update (same song)

The backgrounds have become darker to match the new colored unread text, which is pretty, but in turn that causes the struggle of color contrast that some eyes cant comfortably handle.

(see images attached for more (but not all) examples of the contrast I struggle with)

The main struggle with my vision is, for example;

White Text on a Black/Dark Blue Background or

Black Text on a White Background is very harsh to look at.

V.S.

White Text on a Gray Background, or Light Brown Text on a Peach Background is much more tolerable and easier to take in.

If there was a way to have settings the user could either toggle or freely adjust, such as; Unread Text Color, Read Lyric Text Color, Lyrics Match Background Color, or even just the option to set permanent colors for text/backgrounds regardless of the song, I really think it would help a lot more people than just me!

Over half a billion people worldwide have visual impairments

(not including those fully blind!) and I'm sure all of them would love to enjoy music just like everyone else! 😊

The colour of the lyrics when looking at the lyrics section is a dim white when not playing and a slightly brighter white when that section is currently playing. Revert it back to black when not playing and white when it is playing. For someone like myself who has very bad eyesight and colour-blindness it is barely even noticeable when the lyrics change.

New color style is impossible to read. I don't know if its only me but its almost impossible to see what part of the song is being sung because of the color changes of the lyrics, especially if viewed from farther away. The color is almost the same shade of white. The coming up part should be darker shade so its easier to differentiate the two

And the worst part is that it seems like a bug rather than something they intended, because if you're fast enough and take a screenshot of the lyrics of a song before they finish loading, you can see the original color. But this only works for lyrics you haven’t loaded before. Otherwise, you’ll have to restart the app and open it again to see it or skip to next song.

Hello,

I’ve noticed an issue with the latest version of the Spotify app on Mac. The contrast between the highlighted sentence of the currently playing lyrics and the upcoming lines has decreased, making it harder to follow the lyrics. On the mobile app, the contrast is much higher, making it easier to read.

I remember that the contrast on the Mac app used to be similar to the mobile version. I would love it if this could be reverted to its previous levels, or perhaps an option could be added for users to choose their preferred contrast.

Additionally, the background color of the lyrics on the Mac app is now darker compared to the lighter background on the iPhone app. The lighter background on the iPhone is much easier to read and visually comfortable. Could you consider adjusting the Mac app’s background to a lighter color, or providing an option to let users choose the background color intensity?

Thanks for considering this feedback! I believe it would improve the user experience, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Continuing the theme that this is most likely a bug. When you open a song in full screen mode, the background color becomes normal (only the text itself remains white, but this is always the case in full screen mode). Here are the screenshots -

I hope Spotify will quickly fix this problem, my eyes hurt terribly looking at this text.

Hello, recently it looks strange when I display the lyrics on Spotify. It's suddenly much darker (the lyrics and the background) and just looks bad. Can I change that somehow?

Currently, it's difficult to quickly identify which line in the lyrics is playing. There is no visual distinction between previously played lines and the current line, as shown in the attached image. I suggest adding a visual element to differentiate them. This could be achieved in several ways:

  • Using a distinct color that remains consistent across all songs
  • Making the current line bold
  • Underlining the current line
  • Displaying the current line in italics

In my opinion, the best option is to use a distinct color that is the same across all songs.

It's been months, and this issue still hasn't been resolved. Lyrics are one of the most important features for me and my roommate, and yet it feels like Spotify is completely ignoring the problem.

Please fix this issue!

The lyrics go from white 100 to white 98, how the **bleep** am I supposed to see that from my couch.
The desktop app has gone way downhill.
