Option to disable auto connect and play

Hello,

I was writing to ask for an additional option in settings to prevent Spotify from automatically playing when it recognizes / connects to any bluetooth device.

In my car, when trying to hear driving instructions, Spotify opened itself and began playing. I had to continuously close it (4-5 times) which was creating a driving hazard. Also it begins playing immediately each time i start my car, which has just become annoying.

When using my phone, I'll be watching a video and decide I want to hear the sound. I pop in my headphones and immediately Spotify initiates itself and begins playing, instead of the active app I'd like to be listening to.

Sorry for complaining, but it has just become too annoying. Otherwise, really enjoy the app.

Thank you!

Totally agree. I am having a good look at Apple Music. Just haven’t had the time to make the change!

The person that mentioned the car has a great point, this issue is beyond frustrating it's dangerous. It messes with important audio feeds while driving or in an important call, this can cause real accidents. It's literally just a single toggle button: "DISABLE AUTOMATIC DEVICE SWITCHING"

This is the most frustrating and off-putting feature! And often very distracting. It's so 1800's that this is not selectable by the users.

The auto-connect as a link is a good feature but the automatic play on a different device is major fault in the system. It's ok to show what's playing on a different device in case I'd like to grab it into the one I'm actively using - but that's all there needs to be to it. The automatic transfer of streams from one device to another is wrong.

Listening via a bluetooth device (dual paired) connected to my laptop at work.

Pause spotify, disable bluetooth device, Spotify automatically starts playing loudly through the boxes of my phone.

And according to spotify this is intended behaviour ...

Agreed!  It starts mostly when I'm getting in the car and I need driving instructions or something else.  Very annoying and almost wanting to uninstall the app, but I really like everything else.

easy_iice

Agreed!  What a presumptuous feature.  It thinks we ALWAYS want to play Spotify.  I'd liek it to be MY CHOICE, not the app.    Thank you.

PLEASE DON'T AUTO CLOSE THIS POST.  Here is the solution, as implemented by both Samsung Music and Youtube Music:

The app simply needs a setting to prevent resume of playing, the same as other apps do. For example, see this video https://youtu.be/sAaDWu_2Yr4?si=Kx9CXoA_6YIA9Uam which shows that Samsung Music has a setting "Allow external devices to resume playback" that can be turned off. The video also shows that Youtube Music has a setting for this, also called "Allow external devices to resume playback" that can be turned off. This is what Spotify needs. This is NOT impossible because of the many different possible bluetooth devices.  Spotify can simply provide a setting that prevents it for all, the same as Samsung Music and Youtube Music.

More info: Going back many years, this is a problem for many users, with many threads on Spotify, Reddit, and many other places. I have spent several hours looking through all the threads. It affects thousands of users, with no solution. People are so frustrated. Many claim they deleted the app.

Here on Spotify, there are many threads that claim the problem is solved, and have been closed. Users continue to post that they are not solved, and post frustrated replies continually. Please Spotify engineers, I have taken the time to put together a very good description, please take the time to understand the following.

When a song is playing and paused on Spotify, because the user wishes to go back to the song or playlist at the same spot later, on Android or iPhone, the problem is in common to both devices, and then a bluetooth player is later connected, either Android Auto or an earpiece or any other bluetooth player, Spotify automatically resumes playing. Every single time. Personally, it happens every time I connect to my Honda, and every time I power on my Plantronics bluetooth earpiece.

The problem is not with Android Auto, and not solved when the setting "Start music automatically" is toggled off in the Android Auto settings. Please for the love of God do not suggest that again. Hundreds if not thousands of users have reported that does not stop the problem. Again, this happens with any bluetooth device, including my earpiece. The problem is in Spotify with any bluetooth reconnection.

The problem is also not solved by toggling off the Spotify autoplay setting, which again only applies to playing of similar music. All of us thousands of users have that setting off as well. Please for the love of God do not suggest that non solution again either.

Many many many thousands of hours have been spent by thousands of users on this problem. I just made a trip to go shopping with my wife. I paused my playlist a few days ago, and will want it to resume from the same place, WHEN I CHOOSE TO. However, every time we started the car my playlist started blaring from the speakers. Every... single... time. I paused it again, and swore forcefully every time.

Please, for the love of all that is good, implement the same solution as Samsung Music and Youtube music, and provide the same setting, probably using the exact same language they do "Allow external devices to resume playback" that can be turned off.

It has been so many years. Please, for the love of God, provide a solution with a simple update to your app, iPhone and Android, that will work with any bluetooth connected device on connection. Please. Please. Please. Why wouldn't you?

For completeness: Premium / Canada / Samsung Note 20

Thank you.

Yes, this is a safety hazard.  Samsung Music and Youtube Music have a simple solution, explained below.

Add my vote to having this fixed!  Years are rediculous. No one wants the Spotify app to decide to change where you listen. I have 4 Alexa devices and often will play Spotify on all or some of them, and when I hang up a call I don't want the music to switch to my phone for playback, I don't want it to change at all!

How do I add my vote?  Is this done just by commenting?
