Setting to prefer original (explicit) content over clean alternatives (and vice versa)

Issue

While listening to music, especially when listening to through Autoplay after an album, through Discover, Daily Mixes or automatically generated playlists, Spotify often plays the "clean" edits of songs that have their original version tagged as explicit.

The option "Allow playback of explicit-rated content" is there for people who don't want explicit content, but the behavior of this option is not ideal for people who have it enabled.

If an explicit version of a song exists, I do not want to hear the censored, chopped up version with often mangled lyrics. I want to hear the original song as the artist intended it. In my opinion the clean version is nearly always inferior to the original.

Currently it seems like the use-case of people who want to hide explicit music is valued higher than the use-case for people who want to listen to the original. I would argue that we should be treated at least equally.

Example

What got me here today was while listening to "Ten thousand hours" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and hearing "Make sure the soundman doesn't block-block the drums" and hearing frequent "Shht"'s really breaks the flow of the track.

What especially triggered me, is that it showed that I had "hearted"/liked the song. I did like the original version, and it occurs in multiple playlists of mine. The clean version does not.
Note that this is not a complaint about this song in particular, it is just an example that occurred today.

Proposed solution

If the "Allow playback of explicit-rated content" option is ticked, the "clean" content is very likely of no value to the user, and should never be favored over the original version.

If you do not want to force this behavior to the entire userbase, or change existing behavior for existing users, then an option could be to add an extra opt-in setting to "Block playback of clean edits when original is available" or something similar. So basically the exact opposite of the currently already implemented "Allow playback of explicit-rated content" is desired: never allow clean edits.

Your team might well come up with a different, perhaps better solution, but the end goal would be to never have to listen to a "clean" version again when the original is available.

Previous submissions and discussions

Many ideas have been submitted before, they are however all closed, marked as duplicate, marked as "unclear" or found to have not enough votes.
This new submission is an attempt to combine all previous efforts and hopefully get some traction.

While not all of the options discussed below are exactly the same, they are all about this topic and they all suggest some way of playing the original over the clean edit.

If you see all the previous topics in the table below (there are probably others that I might have missed), it is clear that this is a frequently brought up topic in the community.

Hopefully listing them here helps people find this feature request.

And while they are not 100% related, these topics might not have been raised if this problem was solved, they seem to have found clean options of a specific song, while they explicitly wanted the original version.

I have emailed the general support and asked for an update, let's hope someone shows up even if it's just to say that it isn't happening so we can all move on. I've been holding out hope for too long. This genuinely ruins my listening experience, especially the fact that songs randomly change back to the censored version even though I added the explicit one.

This issue is actually making me reconsider my Spotify subscription.

This subscription used to be without question, my favorite monthly purchase. I loved daylists and DJ and making playlists, jams, etc.

but those positives are overshadowed by THIS SPECIFIC insane quality of life annoyance.

I have a playlist TODAY that I noticed had clean version of a song unintentionally. I either didn’t notice or didn’t catch it, but I always seek out explicit versions. I never ever want to hear a clean version. It insults my intelligence tbh.

i had to go into to the desktop version to mass remove my accidental clean duplicates.

its so lame to hear “sh(🤐)” when im singing along to a song.

personal playlists aside, my daylist and DJ should never EVER play a censored version.

censored vs clean should be explicitly labeled.
explicit currently has an E but why not label clean songs with a lighter “C” so I know that there are two versions? So I can AVOID the clean version?

since that would be stupid, add a feature to allow me to filter and remove all “clean” songs from my platform, listening, from my Spotify. I don’t want to hear them. This is annoying and bothersome and truly has resulted in unnecessary confusion in my music library.

please remove all “clean” versions from my sight, from my ears, from my Spotify library.

seriously please

"please remove all “clean” versions from my sight, from my ears, from my Spotify library."

^ Seriously, this is the best summary right here. Please make it so that I never have to hear or otherwise interact with a "clean" version of any song, ever.

I've already started subscriptions with other companies over this issue, so my Spotify subscription is on life support right now.

Okay...

First I got a non-reply to the request of someone coming here, saying "the idea will be passed on to developer :)" (not what I asked for). Next, after I asked them to again to please contact someone that is responsible for this community site, I got no reply at all. After that, I asked "No reply?" and they said "Hopefully this feature will be available in the future", another non-reply that does not address the fact that I asked for a staff member to come here. Then I asked them to confirm that they will _not_ be contacting the community.spotify.com team, they said "Our team may do reply to you on that thread".

I did not even ask for the feature to be implemented, I asked for SOMEONE to come to the thread and address it. Replies were from different people every time and riddled with grammar mistakes. Absolutely terrible, all they had to do was pass it on to someone and despite repeated requests they won't.

Can someone please tag @spotify on twitter? Also, please reply in the thread if you do. It's very obvious that the people that work support either do not understand the request or are completely unwilling to even pass on a simple request for a comment.

Skully9

They're partying in Sweden and don't care.

Honestly, they prefer censorship of rude language. I was reprimanded by a tech once, when I "cussed" during a chat exchange. They refused to go any further and disconnected. That was 2 years ago. Spotify isn't going to do a "darn" thing to their programming.

phire

@Vobie I tagged them on X/Twitter, but as per Spotify tradition, my post/message has been ignored.

skylord123

Bump! We need this badly. This is one of those things that makes me want to switch to a competitor.

Listen to music the way it was intended to be consumed.

donkey56

Voted. Music is art and it should not be censored. Sticks&stones, if the lyrics in any song offend you then maybe wear a helmet while listening.

Update: listening to Akon's Beautiful I've heard at least two different censored versions with one muting the word "ass" (from line "high heels push up ya ass last name") and then another version that doesn't mute ass but mutes "soldier" (which is innuendo in the line "waistline makes my soldier salute") but c'mon that's ridiculous.

phire

Everyone needs to call out @SpotifyCares on X/Twitter because clearly Spotify does NOT care.

This is not related to the original feature request at all.
