Absolutely, kids love it not for the actual talent but for the beat and what they find popular. There are still some rap I like though. I just don't blast it like it's the best genre in the world. Every genre has it's purpose.
I don't think any genre is overrated since everyone has different preferences and many genuinely like rap. Also, I don't see how bringing up 'trash' subjects are relevant.

I don't think rap (or the tagged hip hop) is overrated. There is some really good hip hop around, really good rap verses as well. For instance I really love this track, both the instrumental side and the flow are amazing!

The explicitness is kind of part of the genre for me already. I obviously don't care much about the 'i have a lot of [redacted], I [redacted] them daily; got lots of cash and i drink guccy coffee' lyrics 😄
But at the same time I don't care about lyrics quite as much as I care about the sound in general, so I don't mind the cursewords. I do listen to music with rather horrible lyrics, but they have a great instrumental side : )
About the mainstream line... I don't care about most of stuff that's going on in mainstream. I definitely don't seem to have any liking towards the currently popular pop rap content, Travis Scott, Moneybagg Yo, Lil Uzi Vert and so on. There is some interesting content under all that as well, but most of the time I don't enjoy what I hear.
They're lacking something I'm looking for in a song. A flow? Some great choices in beat-making? I might not like the some of the vocals that much either.
Lyrics are again pretty much a secondary thing and I've heard tracks that in my opinion suck having a really great lyrical content.. But I've already done my decision on not coming back to the track. 😅
I don't think there is an overrated genre, because most of the time when people talk about a genre being overrated, I've noticed they're either been annoyed to death by the mainstream selection of it, or have had poor experience with fans of the genre (kpop in my case).
Mainstream might be positively rubbish, but what lies under is sometimes quite stunning 🙂
I kinda agree.. I wish people would give more love to rock and other genres
maybe the act of watching is overdo.
no. like every genre there's good and bad stuff. i agree there's a lot of popular rap that all sounds the same and isn't very good, but there's so much great stuff from the 90s and even today like kendrick lamar, childish gambino, etc that people sleep on because they think rap's overrated. you've gotta be hella talented to make a good rap song
This Newschool Trap what a lot of people call rap, is completly overrated. Trash lyrics, no message, just deep beats. I love Rap music, but REAL lyrical Rap. Check out my Oldschool playlist if your intereseted

Definitely
It's overrated. Yes, there's a talent to actually being able to rap (talk fast and rhyme), but there's a lack of musical talent, with most rappers, and the content if most rap is silly. Back in the 80's, there was some cool rap, not that I listen to it, regularly or even somewhat often.
Genres that use instruments and singing, without autotune, like Country, Rock, and Metal are where it's at.
Check out some Alabama, Van Halen, and Iron Maiden, for instance.
Great point. I disagree though; everything popular is overrated to someone. Kind of a useless observation though. That "hive mind" makes up its own and for those on the outside (👋), th'only things to do are either kowtow or carry on.
I don't know much about the genre so take it with a grain of salt when i lament that, despite Eminem's consistent performance (above and beyond), it's just a shame that we went backwards, into mumbling. With duets like Wu-Tang & Texas, sure, rap can be diverse. No music is more diverse than "metal" though, for the fact there are so many sub-genres, often bands playing the same kind of music call it something completely different.

So i'll echo MadmanOnWheels and suggest popular music consumers try something different. I would offer the counterpoint to this thread that "Metal is underrated." Just as useless a statement.
We all have our own tongues; dont let "tastemakers" dull.. because ears are mouths i guess.
I Strongly Agree! Although I do enjoy the old school rap tunes or just music that doesn't sound like a whinny Teletubby. Never understood the whole autotuned sound or how much cleavage is revealed in that hot new video. With that said I wasn't that guy that craved the mainstream circus. Would rather sink down, way way down into the thickness of awesomeness.
Hello, YulTheWizard.
Here's something you should know. Everybody has their own opinions. I like only Eminem's rapping, and other people may feel differently. Some people feel rap is overrated, some people feel rap is the best. I just want to let you know that not everyone feels the same way about a topic. Thank you.
Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I'm personally a fan of all genres, I listen to everything from Pantera, to Cowboy Troy, Trace Adkins, Van Halen, Theory, and a whole bunch of stuff in between. I listen to my fair share of artists like Eminem, .50 Cent, and 21 Savage, but just to the opposite enjoy my FFDP, Metallica, and Rammstein.
