Hey guys,
In this thread i wanted to share my jazz playlists with you.
The first time i heard about jazz was in an interview with Radiohead. They mentioned Bitches Brew by Miles Davis as one of their inspirations. I bought the cd in 1997 but was shocked with the music. Its weird rhythms, harmonies (or lack of) and no song structure. I was used listening to alternative rock like Radiohead and Dinosaur Jr.
In 1998 i was going to concerts alot and my curiosity led me to a jam session in a jazz club. There were four people playing, drums, bass, piano and saxophone. It was then i heard and saw the magic of jazz. They were improvising arround a standard theme and they were really enjoying the jam. Creating 'new' music as they were playing. Since that day i understood what jazz was, but it still took me some more years to finally appreciate Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.

These are my favorite Jazz songs of 2017. It’s hard to say they are “the best” because everyone’s taste is subjective, of course. I’ll just point you to what I like, and you can decide what’s “best” for you. Click https://www.funkish.audio/best-jazz-2017/ for more info.
Jazz is alive & well, and going strong in 2017. If you check the Best Of/Year End lists in All About Jazz for example, you’ll find tons more new Jazz to listen to.
I love the funky side of Jazz, and the genre-bending hybrids (which aren’t pure Jazz, yet instrumental, jazzy & funky), so I also highlight this kind of Jazz in this Best Jazz Songs of 2017 Spotify playlist.
Your Spiritual Jazz playlist is absolutely amazing! I subcribed and will listen deeply. Here's a suggestion that would fit perfectly to your playlist. Archie Shepp - A Prayer

Here's my ECM playlist. I love this label for their ambient (most of the time) signature. It has a cold atmosphere, which I like. I'm glad Spotify finally conclude a deal with them because it took long before they join. ECM Playlist

Thanks for sharing 😉 Is this list meant to be a best of Nu Jazz ever? The opener track is a bit cliché, i skipped it. Overall the list looks good with atjazz, mathew herbert a.s.o. Nice to see you are still active 🙂
Thanks for sharing! The Dutch Jazz all stars seems to be a good overview of (old) Dutch Jazz artists. One name i missed was Rob Franken. Anyway, thanks for compiling a great overview playlist! I subscribed to both.
I tried to put together coherent, known and less known tracks to have a representative list of Nu Jazz. We could discuss for hours what to include in this "best of", and if you have interesting suggestions, don't hesitate! 😉
As far as the first track is concerned, it is well known indeed, and I placed it in first position on purpose : it is a song that attracts the less initiated and is, despite its fame, still a hymn to nu-jazz. 🙂 But for an expert like you, I imagine you've had enough.
I agree about the first song, it's a good opener for people who are new to the genre!
I read it's a rough guide to nujazz, so it makes sense to me now. 🙂
