Hi everyone,
One of my favorite synthwave albums is Light & Magic (2002) by English electronic band Ladytron. The album is strongly influenced by the 80s sound and you can hear it in every track. I personally adore the songs Flicking Your Switch, Blue Jeans and The Reason Why.

Another album I love is Heartland (2007) by Client. As a band that went on tours with Depeche Mode and Erasure they're also very good with displaying new wave aesthetics in both their music and visual presence. The tracks I listen to the most in this album are Lights Go Out and Zerox Machine.

I’m admittedly not very familiar with synthwave; however, my favorite 80s-inspired electronic music album is instrumental duo Zombi’s 2006 release Surface To Air, and my favorite track from it is “Digitalis”:

Zombi aren’t purely a synthwave band, as they incorporate elements of progressive rock into their music as well. I can hear similarities to Rush, both in regards to the use of synths as well as the drumming style; in particular, Zombi’s music oftentimes reminds me of Rush’s early 80s releases such as Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals, when Geddy Lee started incorporating Moog synthesizers as an integral component of Rush's music. At the same time, Zombi's synth-led instrumental passages on Surface To Air also remind me of pioneering electronic music band Tangerine Dream.
Interestingly, Zombi’s Spotify bio also indicates that they are influenced by horror movie soundtracks, which (as with synthwave) I’m not very familiar with. Regardless, I think that the diverse blend of genres in Zombi’s music sounds quite nice, and I’d recommend this album to anyone who enjoys lyricless synth-driven music.
Cheers!
