[Android] App crashing when loading playlists

Hey folks!

You may have noticed that your Android apps might crash when you attempt opening your playlists. We've investigated this and found out that this may happen if they include local files.

We're currently looking into this but, in the meantime, we've confirmed that clearing you app's cached data and going for a complete clean reinstall should solve the issue 🙂

Working on resolving this. We'll keep you posted!

Hey @creature-

Thanks for getting back to us.

Just to confirm, have you tried performing a clean reinstall of the app by following the steps @Yordan sent previously?

If so and it didn't do the trick, would you mind checking if the OS of your phone has any pending updates?

Lastly, sending us the exact Spotify version of your phone would come in handy.

We'll be waiting for your reply.

The format of the file was FLAC, but all 73 of the files I stored on my device are also FLAC. However, only one specific song has started to cause issues suddenly.

I considered downloading the same song again or trying to download it from a different source, but the problematic song is still listed among my local songs on Spotify, even though it has been removed from my device. This means that whenever I open my local songs list on Spotify, the app crashes (after I tried out different sorting ways the song is at the top of the list now), preventing me from testing anything.

The app began crashing on startup when I tried to listen to the problematic song from my liked songs (for some reason, just appearing on the screen/list in liked songs didn’t trigger a crash, unlike other playlists or the local songs list). After I removed the song from my device, the app was able to skip to another song and stopped crashing on startup.

Hey @Rndmann

Thank you for keeping in contact.

We're glad to know that everything is working fine now. We appreciate the time you took following the process and sharing your solution.

In case you need anything else, remember that we're just a post away.

Cheers!

No, everything isn't fine. As I mentioned in my previous post, I cannot open my local song list. I recommend reading the entire discussion carefully from the beginning once again.

Not to mention, the real problem is some songs seem to be causing issues with the app now (assuming I am not the only one having this problem), which wasn't the case several days ago.

Hey @Rndmann,

Thank you for keeping in contact.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. If you're still unable to open the local files list, would you mind confirming if you've already performed the clean reinstall process again as mentioned in the previous post? If not, we'd recommend following the steps mentioned in this article as this will sync the info between your account and your devices. If the audio file was already deleted, it should disappear from your list and let you access it from your device.

Hope this helps. We'll be on the lookout for your response.

No, I didn't perform a clean reinstall, as I'm hesitant to do so, because I've spent quite a bit of time finding songs in my lists and putting them in the correct order. Will a clean reinstall erase songs I liked and my playlists?

Anyway, there is another thing that happened. After opening the local songs list in a split second before the crash happens, I managed to change sorting, which means I at least can open the local songs list now. However, of course, the app still crashes when I try to scroll down to where that specific song is supposed to be. This allowed me to try what I couldn't try before: downloading the same song from another source or in a different format. Spotify didn’t see these new downloads either. Normally, when you download a song, it should appear in the local songs list, but that didn’t happen, possibly because the old version is still present even though it shouldn't be there. Just to be sure, I tried deleting another song that I already had. After sending it to the trash, that song was properly removed from the local songs list. I also downloaded a new song, which appeared in the local songs list without issue, so it seems that other songs didn't have a problem like this.

I noticed another error as well. Although I don’t use this feature often, therefore I don't care much, I thought it might be worth reporting. When I go to the files of the phone itself and choose a song to play directly from there, it prompts me to choose a player. If I select Spotify, the app either crashes or the song fails to play without any crash occurring. This is the case with every song in my storage, including the ones I just downloaded for testing. However, if I open Spotify first and play those songs from the local songs list within the app, it works fine.

creature-

Hi, this has seemingly resolved itself with a reinstall of Spotify, thank you for the support.

Yordan

Thanks for the reply, @Rndmann!

Don't worry - a clean reinstall won't affect your Liked Songs, your local files or the content in Your Library. You'll just have to adjust your settings again (including allowing Spotify to access Files and Media) as well as re-download any content your had saved for offline listening.

If possible, try logging in to your account on the desktop app and removing any problematic local files in your Liked Songs from there. You can use the Backspace key to delete it.

As for the new behavior you discovered, thanks for the feedback - we appreciate it.

Let us know how it goes after the clean reinstall.

Cheers 🤘

My Question or Issue

One if my playlist will not open. When I attempt opening the playlist to play it, the App crashes.

Very annoying.

I'm having the same problem (Android, Samsung Galaxy S20).  It started yesterday, and nothing I can do will fix it.  I can't even get into "Your Library" to delete it, as the app crashes.
