Alexa won't play Spotify

Alexa won't play Spotify

A few days ago, my Alexa (Echo 3rd gen) stopped playing Spotify. I say, play tunes. She goes, Tunes from Spotify. Like she normally does. Then... A beautiful playlist of silence errupts in my room i.e she doesn't actually play it. This is really annoying because I am an addict to Spotify (yes that's a thing) so please fix.

Hey everyone!

We have gone over this thread and summarized all the different issues that we have seen reported here. The main one which seems to be discussed is that Alexa won't play playlist with voice command. Quite a few users report solving this with a few troubleshooting steps like:

  • Unlinking & relinking the Spotify skill on Alexa. You can check how to do it on this page.
  • Making sure Spotify is set as the default player.
  • Clearing cache of your Spotify app by following the steps here.
  • Removing the app permission for Alexa on Spotify through the account page > Manage apps. To re-add it, simply log back in to Alexa.
  • Trying to use a different voice commands to start the playlist - for example - Play Spotify on ... name of speaker. And you can also try to tap on the Alexa to start playback.

Another issue we have spotted is that when using the Connect feature users cannot see their Alexa devices. For this we would also recommend checking the Spotify skill and the network connection. Your router may support 2 different channels for the same network (2.4 Ghz or 5.0 Ghz). You should check if both devices are connected to the same exact channel.

Something else you can try is altering your DNS settings by following the steps here.

Some users in here are also reporting that the app keeps shutting down. In that case we'd recommend making sure both the Spotify and Alexa apps are up-to-date and that you clear cache for both.

With this said, we'll be locking this thread. If you're still experiencing issues, please try the steps above. If none of that helps, you can also create a new thread, where you let us know your exact behavior and the troubleshooting steps you've tried.

Updated which app?

I have an iPhone 11 Pro max and an Echo Dot version 9698492804. I connect the skill and it works for a day, then every morning it’s unlinked again and tells me to connect again. I have updated all devices. I have deleted the echo device and reconnected it. I have uninstalled the apps and logged back into them.  It’s done this for about 2 months. I even deleted other devices from my Amazon account trying to figure out if it was another device. I still can’t seem to fix it.

I am having the same issues, my echo dot no longer plays Spotify, she says here’s Spotify and then silence.. I’ve got everything updated, I’ve deleted and reinstalled, I’ve unlinked and linked and nothing… what is the fix for this as I have no use for Spotify if I can’t play it through a speaker…

Hi, I had the same problem. Tried everything above and nothing sorted the problem. I have now got it sorted by going into the Alexa app, Play, settings, disable Spotify from all profiles. Close everything. Go back into the settings again and enable Spotify to only one profile. Hope this works.

I’m also having this problem. Alexa also will not play Spotify to a speaker group that contains an echo link. I’ve tried all the recommendations - reinstalling the Alexa app and the Spotify app, deleting and recreating speaker groups, disabling and reenabling the skill, nothing. Speaker groups work fine when I remove the echo link.

I just checked and removed my FireTV Stick from the speaker-groups, re-linked theSpotify skill and indeed - it seems to work again. Maybe this is a useful insight for the Spotify-guy working on this.

Sometimes it also helps to delete cache in Spotify app and also just play the content. After like 1 min it restarts by itself and after that sometime it works on echo then

this is stupid..... spotify devs please contact youre ppl at alexa, sort this ish out!!!

regards!

Problem is still there!!!

For me it’s with podcast. Normal music works now! Please Sportify do something ffs

I’m current experiencing a similar issue myself. I can play on each individual Alexa but I can’t play as a group across all of my Alexas which is frustrating. Atleast I know it is a bigger issue and not just me!

I have been having the same issue with the echo dot in my son's room. It started a couple weeks ago and I have tried all the suggested troubleshooting fixes. So far we have had success with turning it off for 30 seconds. However, this only works 50% of the time and I want a permanent solution. Turning the echo off and on again is ridiculous especially considering it only works sometimes.

And still nothing happens here! Why is Spotify not caring?

My Question or Issue

I have a group of Sonos Era speakers and when using Spotify connect it will connect to the speakers and show that it’s playing, but it isn’t. Only when I hit pause and then resume doesn’t restart the song and actually play it. Also when I use Alexa to tell the speaker to play something half the time it is quiet and doesn’t do anything

Hey folks,

Just jumping in to let you know that this is still being investigated by the Spotify and Amazon teams. Keep those reports coming as this will speed up the investigation.

Thanks,

Thank you for the update, but I can’t believe it’s taking so long to resolve this issue.

I am having the same problem as everyone else. I have a new Amazon echo dot device, but I cannot play Spotify music from it. Alexa responds to my request for music, but then there is silence. I uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify as a music option, but that did not solve the problem. I hope a fix is forthcoming.

Hey folks,

Thanks for all your replies and for the info shared.

As mentioned previously in this thread, it's important that you send us some additional info, so we can forward it to the right team. Be aware that we'll need all the following details, so our tech folks can narrow this easily:

  • The exact make/model and OS of the speakers in which you noticed this behavior
  • Does this happen when the playback comes from a different device? Does it happen only when trying to play music on the speakers?
  • Did you notice if this started to happen after a specific event, such as an OS update? If yes, please send us the details.
  • The exact Spotify version you're running on the device which is linked to the speaker (check for possible updates there).
  • Does it happen when connected to a different internet connection, e.g., a hotspot?
  • The exact troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video recording of this behavior. You can attach the videos in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload them to YouTube or Google Drive and make them public, so we can visualize them.

Keep us in the loop!

Hiya!! I keep having the problem that when I ask Alexa to play Spotify it says "sure, I cannot find that on Spotify" grrrr. Ive tried everything listed before and nothing has worked ... Until I just cleared the cache on both apps and it's just played Spotify when requested 🤯🎊🎉 hope this helps others

I have a problem with my 5th generation eco dot . I cant even connect it in the app every time i go link new services and go on spotify its just a blank page.

Same here... My daughter got an echo dot kids (the owl) for Christmas. Impossible to play Spotify... Tried everything suggested in this tread and Alexa still says that she can't find/play Spotify... Looking for any updates 🥸
