Allow different devices to play different songs/ podcasts

Allow different devices to play different songs/ podcasts

  • Most users now have at least 2 personal devices on them at all times. Between phone, mp3 player (iPod), smart watch, tablet, laptop.
  • Should be able to listen to music on one device, and a podcast on another. ie music on the speaker in the room & podcast in headphones.
  • the restriction made sense when most people didn’t have multiple devices on them at all times, to prevent account sharing.
  • but if it is a feature available with the premium membership… well honestly if your going to keep putting the price up every year then there is the expectation the services/ options are going to continue increasing at the same rate to justify the additional costs.
  • not make it a compulsory feature that no one wants like the “jam session privacy invasion junk”… but a toggle on and off option like the jam sessions should be!!!
  • Also highly recommend if you are going to insist on increasing the membership cost every year maybe list the benefits that cost increase have allowed!!!!

Hey @PeeKayKyleThomas, thanks for asking in the Community!

Although you can only play on one device at a time with a single account, there is a way to use the same account on multiple devices to play songs or podcasts.

First, log into the other devices. Then save the content you want to play offline. Turn on the offline mode and you can play that on multiple devices at the same time on the same account.

I understand this is not an ideal solution, but feel free to let us know your thoughts on the ideas board.

Happy Listening. 🎵🙂

Hi @Amayy,

Thank You so much for taking the time to write such a lovely and thoughtful response to the suggestion/ feedback I was providing to Spotify about improvements I would like to see implemented with their service/ subscription.

I personally do have my personal playlist downloaded to both my phone and iPad.
As I like to travel so makes it more convenient,

shoot will even have a few episodes of the podcasts downloaded most the time.

So I can confirm, I have definitely unsuccessfully tried to use the music from a downloaded playlist in offline mode on the iPad&speaker, while trying to listen to an podcast on my phone with headphones.

Is it a solution for you??

(First question I actually asked btw!! 😉 )

For me, it has not worked, so sorry I can’t accept it as a solution or even like your comment in case people mistake it as agreement that it is a resolution( which it isn’t!)

When I spoke to Spotify support after trying everything myself they said that I would have to run 2 profiles if I want to listen to 2 different things at the same time.

Which I don’t feel to be a reasonable or acceptable response, when I pay for a premium membership!

They suggested that I put it here and if enough people agree that it’s something that should be available.

Then it may be something the developers/ tech guys may look at changing in future updates! 🤞

Yes, I 100% listen to music on Spotify and podcast through other apps currently… I would just prefer to not have to do so!!!

Thank You all for your time!

May everyone’s days be full of light, love, laughter and music!! 🌞❤️😹🎵

Hey @PeeKayKyleThomas,

Thanks for your detailed reply.

We really appreciate the time you took to let us know your comments on the matter. We can confirm that it's not possible to play different content on different devices at the same time.

We understand where you're coming from, nonetheless, we can't promise this will be implemented in the future.  We know you’d like to make this as an opportunity for Spotify to become an incredible app.

We'll be here if anything else comes up. Once again, thanks for the feedback.

How am I doing it right now then?
Not that I want to- was trying to change tracks on another device from my phone, which I used to be able to do, but haven’t been able to for the last few months. If I hit a new track on my phone it plays there while the other music is till playing on the iPad.

Hey @Eediot,

Thanks for reaching out.

Have you made sure you're logged in the same account on both devices? Try logging out and back in using the same credentials to rule this out as a possible cause.

If the issue persists, please perform a clean reinstall of both apps and start a new thread in the relevant Help board here if that doesn't help. It would be useful if you share the following:

  • The models, OS versions and Spotify versions of the affected devices.
  • A detailed description of the issue including some screenshots or a short video.
  • Does the same happen when using the web player?

Keep us posted.
