SD Card?

Hi. Ive just signed up for premium to discover that I need an SD card so i cant use it on my phone which is why i signed up!

Is this essential to have a card? Can i get round it? 

I have a bb9900 atm but will probably change to an iphone or maybe bbz10 next month so if i have to buy a card will it be universal to fit either and also my 9900 in the meantime?
