When “smart” shuffle is turned on (even for a second as you toggle back to normal shuffle) local files are removed from your playlist. It would be fine if they were added back properly, but while they are removed from the playlist, Spotify decides to remove them from the phone's storage.
This means every time I turn shuffle on, I have to wait several minutes for all my local files to be copied over from my computer.
This is not a good user experience

I have the same problem - premium spotify plan, xiaomi redmi note 7, spotify 8.9.16.593, android 10
Can confirm have the same issue da fk
The issue is still not fixed. I decided to try out smart shuffle today, but it kinda just deleted an hour worth of songs and started downloading songs from. . . somewhere. I know it downloaded songs from the "improved" queue and somehow from the "suggestions" under the playlist. Though they where never added to the playlist, just downloaded (???), but I concur.
It's stupid that the problem isn't fixed yet, but they still keep the half baked feature in.
Pretty big disparity between downloads and the size of the playlist.
Problem appeared on Windows 10 ver.10.0.19045, Desktop
Same Issue! PLEASE LOOK INTO IT!
Or give us an option to disable Smart Shuffle Toggle in the settings
Moving to Smart shuffle instantly deletes all downloaded songs - have to resync from PC
Spotify Ver 8.9.26.592 (Premium User)
S23 Ultra [Android 14]
Local Files synced from Windows 11 PC
yea same with IPhone 14 pro max here but I sync it with my phone instead of a computer, so it won’t delete the song itself, just temporarily dissappears.
I can’t even play my local files while smart shuffling. It’ll stop playing while I click on it.It can only be played by adding it into queue.
kinda curious about the mechanism and reasons behind it.
I am having this problem since the introduction of "Smart Shuffle". I dislike this feature.
I'm used to hear my songs shuffled and then, every time I wanted to disable shuffle to hear some songs in order, all my local songs got deleted from my mobile device. But I found a workaround to live with it: starting a song on my mobile device using the desktop app deactivates shuffle on my mobile device without going over smart shuffle (keeping my local files).
At least, that was the case until the last update. The order of "Shuffle" and "Smart Shuffle" has been reverted. To activate shuffle, I MUST (!!!) go over smart shuffle (what a **bleep**!!!). Now, I have to download all my several hundred local files again (taking about 10-20 minutes), every time I want to reactivate shuffle.
Please, fix this damn bug. I also would like an option to completely deactivate the feature "Smart Shuffle", like odkrys wrote some comments above.
Spotify keeps ignoring this problem despite being 1 year old. I am baffled why is it such a problem to give us an option to disable the smart shuffle completely.
Hi there again!
Last week, I discovered a new workaround to get it going. I tested it several times this week and it seems to be stable (on my Android device, at least). The workaround:
If shuffle (and smart shuffle) is turned off and after all local files have been transfered to the Android device, double tab the shuffle button. This will skip the smart shuffle and jump directly to shuffle.
But it has to be the right timing. Too slow, and smart shuffle gets activated before jumping to shuffle. Too fast, and the button / GUI didn't update yet and ignores the second tap (at least, if you have a somewhat older device like me; this might not be a problem on more recent devices).
I hope this helps! Have a nice day 😄
The fact that this issue is still an ongoing problem is infuriating.
July Update: Smart Shuffle is still breaking local files 😂
this issue just started for me. i’m on ios 17.5.1 and spotify 8.9.58.473. not including local files in smart shuffle is something i don’t care about but completely removing them from my phone is unacceptable
Nearly 1 year later and this is STILL happening. Smart Shuffle is just a half baked “experiment” and should be abandoned alongside bringing back the old enhance button.
You really don’t know how good you used to have something until it’s gone.
Bump, please resolve this issue. I'm having it too (Ubuntu 22.04)
Seems like it might be related to Smart Shuffle? I hate Smart shuffle it's so buggy they should allow you to just disable it
This has been a problem for nearly a year and they still haven't fixed it??? wth Spotify
Same for me, but they just disappear till I turn "smart" shuffle off and restart the app because they a sourced from a seperate folder on the device itself.
They do still show up in the editing for the playlist and in the number of songs the playlist has.
December 2024 this is still happening! @spotify please fix this!
