A Spotify powered snake game - SpotiSnake

A Spotify powered snake game - SpotiSnake

Hi everyone,

My name’s Daniel, and I wanted to share a passion project I built this summer: SpotiSnake. It’s a mashup of the classic Snake game with Spotify. You search an album, play Snake, and each apple reveals a piece of the album artwork. Every five apples, the snake speeds up and a new track plays.

After ~150 commits, late nights debugging, and a lot of learning, I had a fully working version. Unfortunately, Spotify’s May 2025 API permission changes made it impossible to launch publicly without an org account + 250k MAUs.

To keep the project alive, I refactored it with the Discogs API (playable on itch.io ) . The tradeoff is that Discogs doesn’t support playback, which removes one of the coolest features, the dynamic music tied to gameplay.

GitHub repo has the fully spotify powered demo + docs: danielllesk/spotisnake (cant link)

Even though it can’t be released in the way I imagined, I wanted to share it here because:

  • It was an amazing way to learn more about APIs + game dev.

  • I wrote up detailed technical documentation and even “journey notes” that show the behind-the-scenes process.

  • I’d love feedback from the Spotify developer community, both on the build itself and on the challenges of experimenting with Spotify APIs as a solo dev.

Thanks for reading, and if you do try it out, send me your finished album covers!

— Daniel
