Authoriztion: Illegal scope/invalid scopes

Authoriztion: Illegal scope/invalid scopes

When trying to use the authoriztion flow outlined in the docs, I navigate to:

https://accounts.spotify.com/authorize?response_type=code&client_id=[MY_CLIENT_ID]&scope=user-read-private+user-modify-playback-state+streaming+playlist-read-prrivate+user-read-recently-played&redirect_uri=[MY_REDIRECT_URI]
and see the attached screenshot.
I keep getting invalid scopes as an error with the SDK too.

There's a typo in one scope:

playlist-read-prrivate

it has to be:

playlist-read-private

Thank you! I corrected this but still find I'm unable to get playback (beyond the first 10 seconds of a track), despite being authorized. I have a listener on the player for '

playback_error' and I get an error when I try to playback.

Moreover, I have a listener on the '
authentication_error' event and I am told 'invalid scopes' sometimes. This is all after the typo fix, and my account is a premium account. Do you have any clue what could be causing this?

No, sorry. I've never saw that error before.

You delete spotify app in your pc an then You can download web  " https://www.spotify.com/tr-tr/download/other/?tblang=french " then. you can choose Windows { 10(32-bit)}. They can download it then problem is solving. I can try it.

Hi @Makir1nn

That link you have provided has six scopes that are not documented at this page. Those scopes are:

playlist-modify

playlist-read

transfer-auth-session

user-modify

user-modify-private

user-personalized

Edit: @ Everyone, if this is bug is caused by the official Spotify app, please provide your OS version and Spotify version number.

If you have a wallpaper plugin installed into your browser or any other plugins, try to disable them before logging in again.

I’m seeing the exact same issue, but in the official Spotify desktop app (v1.2.62.580 on Windows). When attempting to log in, the browser shows desktop_login_accounts:4, which maps to error=invalid_scope.

I inspected the OAuth request using Fiddler and confirmed the desktop app is sending invalid or deprecated scopes, including:

playlist-modify
playlist-read
user-modify
user-modify-private
user-personalized

These aren’t listed in Spotify’s official scope documentation and break the entire login flow. The request fails even before any user credentials are submitted.

Logging in works fine:

  • On another Windows user profile. Same machine

  • In the web player

  • Using Postman with a personal developer app and valid scopes

This looks like a bug in how the desktop app constructs the authorization URL. I already tried to uninstall rainmeter, disable Wallpaper Engine and tried to login via different browsers.

Hi all,

I recommend updating the app to its latest version to ensure optimal performance.

If the issue continues and you originally installed the app from the official website, try installing the version available in the Microsoft Store instead (or vice versa) to check if the same behavior occurs.

Cheers!

i'm sent to the website and get message "illegal scope"

Hi all,
I had the same - just go to settings insted of log in and select "no proxy" - fixed it for me.

Hi, had the same problem, re-installed the app a bunch of times, tried the No-Proxy, but nothing worked. After 2 hours trying to find another solution, I just restarted my Mac, installed the app again and I had the option to use the QR code directly. Make sure you uninstall the app before the restart, and delete it from your bin, I was also logged off on the web app and on my phone, idk if that did something, but here I am.

me too ...

but I don't know how to connect by QR code

Just select NO Proxy from the settings during login or sign up and that should fix your problems
