February 2026 Spotify for Developers update: thread

February 2026 Spotify for Developers update: thread

Hey everyone, I’ve created this thread to provide an open space for discussion, feedback, concerns or ideas on an upcoming update to Spotify for Developers access.

We’ve shared a blog post that explains what’s changing and why. Please use this thread to share any thoughts about the update.

We'll try our best to answer questions but we're not in a position to respond to every reply in this thread. Where appropriate we will add updates in this post to ensure visibility to all commentators (instead of burying the information in the comments). I am not able to reply to individual DM’s but please note that everything shared here will be read and considered. If related questions or discussions pop up elsewhere in the community, we’ll link or merge them back here so everything stays in one place.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Update:
After some review and following feedback we have received from you below, we have decided to postpone endpoint access changes for existing Development Mode integrations. All other changes, including the Spotify Premium requirement, the authorized user cap and one Client ID per developer limit, will take effect for existing Development Mode integrations as planned. Newly created Development Mode Client IDs remain subject to the updated rules introduced on February 11. We will share additional details on revised timelines as they become available.

You can find the full details in the blog post, and we’ll add links to any supporting documentation there as it becomes available.

Will the web api changes reducing the endpoints all take effect on February 11th broadly? or does the March 9th date apply for existing developer accounts too?

Do these web api restrictions also apply to apps in extended quota mode?

Question. Is it possible to move my app to another account. I currently run a service (basyl.stream) for a long time on a separate free account. I wanted to start to use the api in my premium account, but new applications for the api are locked so I can't move the service to my premium account.
So what is the solution?

Hey @Takuen

Starting Wednesday, 11 February, all newly created Development Mode Client IDs will automatically fall under the updated Development Mode rules.

From 9 March, these same requirements will also apply to all existing Development Mode integrations.

These web‑API requirements apply only to integrations operating in Development Mode; they do not apply to SDAs that already have a quota extension.

I hope this helps.

It looks like I will need to update one of my existing integrations to account for removed metadata. How would I go about testing against the updated API before March 9? Would I just have to create a temporary testing integration next week?

Additionally, it'd be helpful if somebody updated the details about how track relinking is going to work moving forward (https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/concepts/track-relinking). None of the documentation released so far really defines the new behavior (aside from the fact that linked_from is now being removed).

good

When will we be able to create new apps in the dashboard again? first time trying the API

Hi @yoamal

You will be able to create an app on Wednesday, 11 February again.

I hope this answers your question.

Any chance that apps can be reviewed upon request? The 5 oauth user limit means it's completely pointless integrating, and yet our whole business model would drive more native platform plays. Make it make sense please.

Removing the ability to get songs from a playlist is breaking my script. I used this to track multiple playlists to find new songs. If this isn’t restored, I’ll need to switch to other platforms, like Apple Music.

Well, no wonder I can't create an app in Spotify and retrieve the client ID because I don't have a premium account. I agreed with you that this is a major issue.

ANswer him, but we still with a lot of missing information, and this usually lead to disinformation and lead to fake-news about the whole system, so a good measure would be more replies with clear information, like the tons of questions here with no answer at all...

Is the get_artist_albums endpoint available for development mode accounts or not? the blog post mentions it being available, but it has a "depreciated" badge next to the official API docs.

furthermore, are all original endpoints still available to extended quota apps, or are the endpoint changes for all apps?

The answer to the user Joao helps a lot, but still his second question about the usage quota, since now are not allowed more 25 users and just 5. Another point is that, as is going to be allowed only one app per account, how Spotify is going to choose the app from users that are going to stay at 9 march, since some developers could have more than one in their dashboard that were previous created ? Who is going to do the pick ? Spotify ? User ? If Spotify, based in which criteria ?

On the 9th of March, if you have more than 1 app, they will still be available in your dashboard and function as normal. You will not be able to create any additional apps with the new limit (unless you remove all yours apps, go down to 0).

The endpoint changes will on February the 11th only affect newly created clients (from when the client creation opens up again).

On March the 9th the endpoint changes will also affect all existing dev mode clients.

The API restrictions does not apply to extended quota mode clients at all.

Thx, but when you say as normal, at March 9 they are going to fall into the new capped API too, correct ?

It was wrongfully marked as deprecated, we will update the documentation (it is not deprecated). All original endpoints are still available to extended quota apps.

Yes, on March the 9th, all dev mode clients will fall into the new capped API too. Extended quota mode apps are exempt from the capped API changes.

Bonjour @rbonif_27, je crois que le bouton pour créer une app sera activé le mercredi 11 février.
