My Question

Hello everyone,

I’ve developed an Android app that tracks Spotify song metadata and vital parameters via a smartwatch. I’m preparing to publish it on the Play Store, but I won’t be able to meet the requirements for Spotify’s Extended Quota Mode.

However, my app only uses the App Remote library of the Spotify SDK— it does not rely on the Spotify Web API.

My question is:
Can I make the app accessible to an unlimited number of users by only using the App Remote Library, without applying for Extended Quota Mode?
Or does the authentication process used by the SDK still rely on the Web API, thereby imposing the same user limits?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have the same question for the iOS SDK. Is it possible to simply launch the spotify app, play the current song, and return to my app without the Web API's extended quota mode?

Update: I don't think it's possible. However, Spotify also posts broadcasts messages about song data and those you can receive with your app. You have to turn on the Broadcasts within the Spotify App. The Broadcasts should be independent of the extended quota mode. That is at least something I found while testing. But this could also change in the future.

Hi @Simonandy and @tday

Thanks for your question, and apologies for the delay.

I followed up with the Spotify team, and here's what I found:

Even if your app only uses the Spotify App Remote SDK and not the Web API, the authentication process still imposes the same user limits as the Web API. That means your app will still be subject to Spotify’s standard user cap unless you apply for and are approved for Extended Quota Mode.

So unfortunately, using just the App Remote Library doesn’t bypass those limits. If you're planning to publish your app on the Play Store and want to make it available to an unlimited number of users, you’ll still need to go through the Extended Quota Mode application process with Spotify.

I hope this answers your question. If you need anything else, feel free to ask!
