My Question or Issue

Dear Spotify Team,

My name is Mateus, and I am currently developing an academic project. The focus of my research is to explore the relationship between musical features and the potential success of a song. The main objective is to demonstrate whether it is possible to use data-driven approaches, including artificial intelligence, to understand and predict patterns of musical popularity.

For this purpose, I would like to kindly request permission to use Spotify’s API data exclusively for research and academic demonstration. The data would be consumed to train a machine learning model and to showcase results in a controlled academic environment. The project is strictly non-commercial and will not be used for any profit-making purposes.

The intention is to evaluate whether the characteristics provided by Spotify’s API (such as audio features and metadata) can help identify patterns that may correlate with a song’s success. The results will be presented solely as part of my academic research, serving as a proof of concept to highlight the possibilities (and limitations) of applying artificial intelligence in this field.

I would greatly appreciate your support and guidance on the proper way to use Spotify’s data within these academic boundaries. Please let me know if there are any specific terms, requirements, or procedures I should follow to ensure compliance with Spotify’s policies.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Mateus.

Hi Mateus,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing details of your project. Please note that under Spotify’s Developer Terms and Developer Policy, Spotify Content (including audio features and metadata) cannot be used to train machine learning or AI models, even for non-commercial or academic purposes.

Sadly, I don't know any alternatives.

I hope this answers your question. If you have further questions, the Spotify Community is here to help!

Hi Ximzend,

I was wondering if there is anyway of getting spotify permission to use it.

As sharing all the ways the data was used and the results obtained, or any other way...

We would use another data source to make our research, but spotify's one is the best one out there...

Would it be remotely possible to get that permission?

Hi @MateusSA

Spotify needs to apply the same rules to everyone, so they’re not able to make individual exceptions. Just so you know, the Audio Features endpoint is also deprecated for new apps, so it won’t be available going forward.

Hope this helps!
