Hey @q9xuh_-gvb0gc,
Thanks for coming to the Community.
When you sign up for a free trial, you may notice an authorization charge for a small amount on your account. This is Spotify’s way of verifying the validity of your payment method. It’s only a temporary hold and will disappear shortly.
Although Spotify releases these funds immediately, it may take longer for your bank to process the transaction.
I hope this clears things up 🙂

I went to do the three month free trial for premium and it says it’s totally free. And yet when it goes to my card, it’s declined because it tries to charge me 1.01. The reason I’m pouncing on free trial is because I have no money, so I can’t use the free trial because I can’t pay for the FREE TRIAL.
what the **bleep**? Do you not know the meaning of FREE TRIAL.
I used PayPal with crypto.com card and it only charged me £0.01
Spotify should tell us from the beginning that they will try to take 1.01 quid from our bank account instead to lie to us, omission it's still a lie.
When I tried to get the trial there was 0 GBP. And only after I've put my card details I've seen the 1.01 charge. That's bad and ugly. I've never seen this kind of strategy at anyone else, just been honest.
When you are trying something for one month you don't need to have money in that bank account. Because you want only to try before paying for it.
I know that's only a temporary hold how they said. But this is only a zero cost trial and in my opinion Spotify are discriminating between the that ones with money in their banks at that moment and the other ones who had not. Repeat, when you see 0 GBP you will think that it will be a 0 GBP card check how everyone does.
On the other hand almost nobody is using a main account card for trials. I've done it in the past and even after canceling that trial that website still tries taking money from my bank. I was lucky having all my money in the savings pot and they couldn't get anything. I had to speak with my bank and black them.
So.... Now, Every time when I'm trying anything I'm using a special card dedicated only for trials, with no money on it and if I like the product I'll use the proper subscriptions virtual card which is pointing to a dedicated pot for subscriptions in my bank. In this way I can control the situation much better. Sometimes it's very hard or tricky canceling some subscriptions from some providers and if they are making cancellations to tricky, I can cancel de virtual card or not transfering money in the allocated pot for that subscription.
I don't know to be bad, but this is only my honest opinion based only on my experience and nothing more.
Many thanks and happy days!
