Hi @Mehati,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

If you’re the plan manager for the Premium Duo plan, you can change your plan to Premium Family by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your account page
  2. Under Your plan, click Change Plan
  3. Select Premium Family

Your plan will be updated immediately, and your billing schedule will change due to the price difference between the two plans.

At your next payment date (which you can view on your account page), the account of the other member of the old Premium Duo plan will revert to the free plan. You can then invite them (as well as other members of your residence) to the new Premium Family plan by following the steps in this support article.

If you’re a member of the Premium Duo plan (rather than its plan manager), you’ll need to first leave the plan before starting or joining a Premium Family plan. As a member, you can leave the Premium Duo plan by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your account page
  2. Under Your plan, click Change Plan
  3. Scroll to Spotify Free and click Cancel Premium
  4. Continue through to the confirmation message.

Your account will immediately switch to the free plan, and you can then either start your own Premium Family plan here, or join a Premium Family plan after its plan manager sends you an invite (they can follow these steps to invite you to the plan).

Bear in mind that Spotify users must reside at the same address as the Premium Family plan manager in order to accept the invites to the plan. Note as well that members can only switch between different Premium Family and Premium Duo plans once a year.

You can also read more about how the Premium Family plan works in this support article as well as in this FAQ article.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!

I can see how you upgrade to family and can then invite new family members. What is not clear is what happens to my duo partner and their playlists etc. If they switch to free and then rejoin my family plan will they keep their music preferences and playlists. I feel it should be automatic that they transfer to the family plan. David

Hi @davedelyth,

No worries, Spotify users keep all of their playlists, saved music, and settings no matter which plan they switch to or from.

If you’re the plan manager for a Premium Duo plan and you upgrade to Premium Family, your Premium Duo partner won’t lose any of their playlists, saved music, or settings upon reverting to the free plan and then joining your new Premium Family plan.

However, note that since downloading music for offline listening is a Premium feature, your Premium Duo partner will need to re-download any music for offline listening once they’ve joined your new Premium Family plan.
