My Question or Issue

Recently the quality of Daily Mixes have declined significantly. I tend to listen to albums that have a short intro (1-2 minutes long) and long individual tracks. And in the past few weeks all of my Daily Mixes are filled with these intros and very short tracks from the albums (very few are over 7-8 minutes long).

Whatever the change it was, I'd appreciate if it was reverted or improved.

Same happens to me, SPOTIFY YOU s*CKS

Hi all,

I was wondering if there is a way to opt out ANY track snippets, or any track lasting from 1 to 3minutes in radios or discovery playlists ? And if not, have mercy and add these 5 lines of codes please... Saying this is nerves wracking would be a huge understatement. I launched an artist radio and out of 11 tracks, only 2 or 3 are actually worth listening ?! I know attention span is in free fall but please, I subscribed to this platform to listen to music, not to clic on next all the time.

I've also tried applying for a "new idea" but the page is not even loading... Amazing.

I can't be the only one to report this infamy, am I ?..

Best regards,

Asch

Hey @aschnt,

Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome. We've gone ahead and moved your post, since it fits better here in our help boards.

That being said, we'd like to add some insights about this behavior. Keep in mind that radios are created by Spotify based on your recent listening activity. We suggest you make sure the Private Session is off, so the algorithm can gather enough info about your most recent listening activity. Also, make sure you're listening to music not only from other recommended playlists like Discover Weekly or Daily Mix, but through the Search option as well.

It's worth mentioning that, if you create a radio from your mobile device app, you can select the three-dot menu on the songs you don't want the app recommend you again and tap the Hide this song option. So, we'd recommend actively exploring some new music, and check in the coming weeks and let us know how it goes.

Lastly, due to a high amount of new Idea Submissions to review, we are temporarily pausing new submissions. But no worries, once it's open again, you can submit your idea (if you don't find in the existing ones an idea that fits yours).

We hope you found this helpful. We're always here to help.

That is not a helpful answer. I wish Spotify would look at the issue rather than trying to say it doesn't exist. I came here just now in June 2023 because of the same problem. Please take a look at this, it is quite annoying. Thanks

yep, guys, i used to love DW but now i just skip it totally if i see (2-3 weeks or so already) total length of ~1 hour (used to be 2-2.5 hours, same amount of 30 songs). what a pity! what a shame!

I agree. I am very dissatisfied with the short songs.  I am considering leaving Spotify for another service

I noticed that many of these short 'intro' songs are actually AI generated music. If you notice this issue: check the artist who composed this song, have they only released albums this year? are all the tracks on the albums the same short length? if you google their artist name do they have a presence outside of streaming services, like live shows, a real website, discogs?

I am finding that within my preferred genre (ambient, techno) 95% of recommended songs are short low quality AI generated music that are making it to the top of the recommended play lists. I suspect the short form factor favors spotifys algorithm. I have looked for a way to flag these producers/artists as fake but I can't find an option to do this. I have since decided to move to another platform so unclear if this issues has been resolved in the last month.

surprise surprise, but after i wrote it and experiencing 2-3 weeks of undesired change it all came back to normal (2,5 hours total) again. i'll see how it goes from now on. and i'm worried if i reach the stage of AI generated music - or it'd better be good! 🙂

We are now 4 weeks later. No improvement as you can see in this picture.

The only tracks that are longer than 1min are the ones already in my likes. How in the **bleep** is that even possible for an algorithm ?

So my request remains the same. Can we implement some lines in the code to toggle an option with or without 1-2min tracks please? I'm beyond fed up with this snippets.

Hello AlejaR,

I am experiencing this a lot. There seems to be some compounding problem where short songs that are played weight the algorithm to even more short songs. I turn on the mix and am working or reading, and the next thing I know five more dumb short songs have been played. I don't have the time to curate the Mixes, so their auto-generation needs to get fixed.

Thanks,

Matt

Also affected of this in my "Discover Weekly" today.

The music style and genre matches what I usually listen to, ambient/house/electronic, but much much shorter and often ending pretty abruptly. A lot of it indeed looks generated and is not necessarily high quality.

In my discover weekly I got 8 tracks that are 1-minute long and 4 tracks that are 2-minutes long. This should be prevented as these songs are more like samples than full songs. They are not intros.
Moreover, only 1 song is longer than 4 minutes, while majority of music I listen to are house and techno tracks on average lasting 6 minutes.

Can confirm this issue is happening with my account as well. All personalised mixes and auto-play radios heavily prioritise intro and interlude tracks of very short run-times. It makes for a jarring and infuriating experience. I want to listen to actual songs! Long ones that take time to develop! Not just a load of snippets. It's truly wrecked my experience of Spotify and makes me avoid any auto-generated lists. Considering unsubscribing and trying another service. The quality and variety of the algorithms in recent years has seen a severe decline.

Especially with classical; I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue, smh Capturespotify.PNG

Even if you played a symphony it would suggest 1 minute piano etudes after. Guess it's a sign of the Tik-Tok-isation of society, attention spams only last 1 minute before need something new. Would like if I was suggested actual long form (not even long form, just normal length!) songs again.

UPDATE: My discover weekly is interesting again and does not contain these 1-minute lasting "songs". There is only 1 song lasting 2 minutes, the rest is between 4 and 14 minutes 🙂

Spotify likes money, exploiting art and not giving**bleep** for its costumers.

I sort playlists starting with the long songs and without shuffle and switch when

I hit songs shorter than 2 minutes. Not ideal...

A few years back I found cool things every week in my release radar and discover

weekly. Now its just sorting out fake music. Spotify I hate u so much!

This is exactly what I was thinking. I mostly listen to songs between 6-30 minutes, but my daily mixes are 80% under 2 minutes.

Listening to an album with 4 10-15 minute songs? Have 20 1 minute songs in autoplay.

Love progressive Metal? Have some intros and interludes in this daily mix.

My algorithm must be unsaveable at this point with how much the short song bias has tainted it, and it'll indeed be "based on what I listened to" like a lot of the prewritten staff replies to these posts suggest. Thanks TikTok

Hi everyone, I'm a new Spotify user and I really like the idea of Daily Mixes, and I really like their selections. But, I have this issue with short songs as well.

As it was discussed before, I think a bug in the algorithm is causing this, and it's related to the total length of the mixes, where 2-3 hours of music needs to be spread out in 50 songs. That's 2.5 - 3.5 minutes average, add to that some longer songs that will go in, so the result is a lot of ~2 minute songs.

I think this needs to be addressed at the tech team level and it would be nice to have a solution soon.

Attaching three of my today's mixes, all of which are totaling at 2 hours.

HI @Alex,

"The Algorithm" is a commercial tool. This tool appears to push short songs in favor of long songs which, according to the feedback here and initial raising of the complaint, does not match listening history or increase _listeners satisfaction_.

So, this is not a "request for help" post, I think that @Bollotoral posted this on the correct thread as this is a call for fixing/altering the algorithm.

I second that my generated playlists (Release Radar, Discovery Weekly) contain way too many short tracks (<2 min), which doesn't reflect my listening history. Hiding short tracks from these lists seems to have no impact at all.

Best regards,
