Can't follow friends on Iphone

What is up with the 'follow' function on iOS? Why can't I just click the button and then it follows a friend. Or why is it that my friend says he followed me but I dont see him in my followers? Having looked through the forum it seems like folks have been having issues with this for years?! I had no issues following people in Rdio...doesn't seem like it should be this complicated.
