Car controls skip over a song

I have a subaru impreza and use it to play spotify (premium) via USB. When i use the car controls (either on steering wheel or dashboard) to go to the next song, it skips over it. So if I'm on song 1, it passes over song 2 and goes to song 3. In order to play song 2, if I'm on song 1, ill have to hit forward then backward very quickly. This is getting annoying. It works to skip a song correctly via phone but i'm driving so i can't always look at my phone. And this is only spotify, the apple music on my phone skips songs correctly. This has been happening for months please help!!
