Downloading to Ipod Shuffle

My son is at boarding school where they don't allow the newest Ipod with a camera and internet access, only the older school types like Ipod Shuffle.  Have been struggling for several days to get his Spotify Premium contents onto the Shuffle. Can this be done and if so, can someone shoot me over the steps? I keep clicking on "import playlist" and then I click on Itunes since I know how to import from Itunes but nothing happens when I do that.  Signed, confused mom.
