Spotify app killing my battery on iOS 9.3.3

Within the last month or so I have noticed that the Spotify app is having a serious impact on battery life. I am using an iPhone 6S running iOS 9.3.3. The app uses 3x more battery than any other app on my phone. Over the last 24 hours it has accounted for 36% of battery drain despite only 3 minutes of screen time.

What's going on? Spotify never used to impact my phone like this. 

Troubleshooting attempted so far, to no avail:

- uninstalled/reinstalled app

- force quit the app twice

- restarted phone

- upgraded from iOS 9.3.2 to 9.3.3

Same problem here... I listen to my music on my phone on my commute to work and the battery is dead by lunch. I have data disable and background refresh off, but it is still chewing 30x more battery usage as any other app I use as much. Pretty much useless!
