Spotify chrome cast volume unaffected by iOS lock screen volume

On an iPhone 7 plus, when playing Spotify through chrome cast I find that the iOS lock screen volume doesn't not seem to be linked to the volume of music being played through chromecast. This is inconvenient because requires opening Spotify app then using volume buttons on phone, especially if you need to quickly turn off music due to some interruption.
